Hemingway Rewritten – scale not crop header image

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there a way to have the header image fully scale rather than crop?

I believe ‘background-size: contain;’ will handle that, but the image is then not full width on larger resolutions (perhaps because of the ‘section-inner’ class?).

And using ‘background-size: 100% auto;’ on smaller resolutions dark bands appears above/below it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not seeing a section inner class in Hemingway. Are you talking about a different theme?

Since you have no header image on the site you referenced, I worked on the demo site and was not able to get things to work with “contain” cleanly, even using @media queries to target width ranges.

The main problem is that when you get down to the widths of tablets in portrait orientation, the block with the tagline and title are huge compared to the header image, which is a sliver above that element.

    Thanks.

Sorry, my error on the ‘section-inner’ code – that’s in ‘Hemingway’ rather than ‘Hemingway Rewritten’… which has differently-name divs.

(I’m currently testing both on a self-hosted basis… and posted here for advice because although Rewritten is available for self-host, it’s more commonly used here and hence I felt I’d get better advice.

Having since looked into css backgrounds, I think what I want isn’t possible without j/s and hence I’ll stick with the cropping of ‘cover’ rather than ‘contain’ or ‘100% auto’.

Hi there, there is a Hemingway theme support forum at WordPress.org at: http://wordpress.org/support/theme/hemingway . Since there can be some differences between the version here and the self-hosted version, I would suggest seeking help in the WordPress.org Hemingway Rewritten forum.

    Thanks.
That thread is Hemingway rather than Hemingway Rewritten – and although originally from the same author, HR is different (apparently reworked by WP).
No worries though, as I said in the earlier post, the desired behavior I want isn’t available.

Actually, if you go to the Hemingway theme page at WordPress.org you will see it is Hemingway Rewritten rather than the old one, and if you click on the link at lower right to View the Support Forum it takes you to the forum I referenced, so I think that is the correct forum.

If you look at our Hemingway Rewritten Theme Showcase page, you will see the same theme author name.

I would post there and see if the theme author perhaps has some ideas. They may be able to tell you what needs to be changed in the theme PHP script files.

No desire to argue here… unless I’m mistaken, it’s exactly as I said… that Hemingway page is not for HR and in the second reply on this page the author states ‘As I haven’t developed Hemingway Rewritten I’m not sure how the code is structured’.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmmm, I’ll chat with the theme team and see what’s going on. Thanks a lot for letting me know.

    Thanks.

And just to clarify an earlier point, I’ve not seen HR available from the WordPress.org site or through self-hosted installs. Instead, I found it on the WordPress com site with a ‘download for self-hosted link’.

That’s what led me to post here, because it wasn’t a ‘normal’ self-hosted theme there weren’t specific threads in the .org site forums… whereas I’d noted some good good answers here (many of which were from you personally).

So yeah, Hemingway and Hemingway rewritten originate from the same author and are very very similar (the only difference I’ve seen is naming of divs/classes).

And finally, if I’d bothered to learn enough about css backgrounds, I’d not have needed to have posted. :-)

No problems on the CSS help and learning. You can start with it a little at a time and you just might find out it’s a good bit of fun. :)

‘…start with it a little at a time and you just might find out it’s a good bit of fun.’

Oh, I wish. :-) It’s become an enormous pain in the rear, but what’s the alternative?
