Here is what I want my blog to do….can you tell me what I need to have?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been looking at everything a blog can do…it is mind boggling and not at all as easy as I thought! Kudos to all of you!

My goal is to help people maneuver through these difficult economic times with a variety of resources they may not be aware of regarding health care, food programs, Social Security, SSI, Medicare, Domestic Violence Resources etc.

What I started can be seen on enlighteningbridges.wordpress.com and I have learned it is not operating how I want it to. I had planned on setting up categories with sub-categories but when I spoke with thesacredpath he mentioned static pages. Is that where there are click on tabs up top that one clicks on and can I add/update those pages as needed?

I know I would like something that operates where I can provide a subject and then break it out with informtion by a sub-category. For instance………Major subject: Healthcare Subs: Medicare and Health Insurance available for the uninsured.

Can a blogroll be put on each page or can it only go on the first page? Does a blogroll go to a website always?

That’s probably enough for now! I am such a novice if you couldn’t tell but determined to get information out that can help others.

    Thank you all!

Static or no static front only has to do with what a visitor sees when landing on the main page of your blog (its main URL): the posts area or a page like the one you’ve set – nothing to do with categories. Categories should be the main sub-groups of your posts (of which you’ve got none at the moment), and their list is in your sidebar, no matter which page of your blog you’re in. Same thing applies to the blogroll (once you add links and the Links widget).

Is there a reason I can’t see “manage” on my dashboard? and my categories seem to be stuck in pending and I have not been able to find a way to get them out. Thanks

“Manage”? There’s no “manage”. Perhaps this will be useful to you:

As for categories, a category won’t show up in the sidebar unless there is at least one post assigned to it.

I haven’t seen this done, but you could make your static first post be an outline, organized as you like, each line of which is a link to one of your posts. You’ll probably need to add all the links by hand, and keep updating it each time you added a new post to the blog.

You have only one post on your blog so far, called “Home.” You have not assigned it to a category. When you make a list of categories, they won’t show up until you assign a post to them. An empty category won’t be visible: a category which has no posts in it has no point in making itself known.

You also have a page called “Home” (the tab on top of your blog) and that is your main posting page. It comes with the blog and is part of your “theme,” so that your readers can always find their way back to the part of your blog where you write all your posts.

I’m suspecting that what you have written as your first post is really what you want to put on a page that would usually be called “About.” It’s an overview of why you are blogging, what you want to accomplish and who you are. Copy that, and go to your dashboard and make a new page. Paste that material there. Publish and it will become a tab at the top of your blog.

Then start adding some posts. Go to your dashboard and add posts. As you write them, assign them to categories, then publish them.

You’ll also want a category widget in your sidebar so people can find the different topics you write about.

Learning the difference between pages and posts will be a good start:

    Post vs. Page

Thank you so much…that was all very helpful!!! and yes I lost my about page somewhere along the line!
Hopefully I will get with the program sooner rather than later…

@sensuouscurmudgeon: Quite correct, although usually not necessary – but enlighteningbridges had no posts yet.

What I would suggest is simply publishing a couple of posts (even if they are nonsense posts), so that he/she gets a better idea of how things work.

@Tess: Funny thing is the post WAS a page – just now changed to a post.

IMHO, I think you should not worry about complications like static pages until you write a few posts and giving them categories. Once you’ve learned by doing something, you can move on. Remember, you can always go back and change things, but if you haven’t made a start at all, there will be nothing to refine or revise.

    panos,
Yes, I think it happened near the end of my first long-winded post so then I went back and changed things around to suit.

  • Unknown's avatar

(Tessie, your post was long, not long-winded!)

  • Unknown's avatar

Aw, but I’m winded, having to write it two ways…

  • Unknown's avatar

“Ay, madam, but I am sure you are not”…

WOO HOO!!! I got something to work! However, I am open to suggestion as to what should be on my Home Page because while I want things to be in categories I don’t want everything to be “out of order” and mixed up when I post. I am assuming I can add a new page for my categories with everything per subject on a page in order and just edit as needed. Is that right?

P.S. I have been called verbose myself on occasion Tessie! sounds so much more refined to be “verbose” rather than “long winded”!!! IMHO

    enlighteningbridges,

    Glad you got going!

When your readers click on a category, the software will automatically generate a page with a list of all your posts in that category. You don’t have to do anything else.

But what I just did shows on my homepage! Should I have made a new page and just left the Home page blank until I decided what should really go on it?

I am so excited that I did get something to work tho!

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s how it’s supposed to work. Go back and assign a category to the post you wrote. Then write another post and give it a category.

    What categories do you want?
health care, food programs, Social Security, SSI, Medicare, Domestic Violence Resources ??
    You get to choose!

Do a few posts, they don’t have to be perfect—even something like “I will have information about medicare here”.

Then you can put a category widget into your sidebar. A category won’t show unless it has at least one post assigned to it.

See how that goes. Then let us know how you are doing.

  • Unknown's avatar

And yes, they will all be on your Home page.
