Hero theme post slider issue

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m having trouble with the post slider on a WP.com site using the Hero theme. I believe I have everything set up correctly, meaning, posts are “tagged” with “featured” and the posts themselves have featured images plus the static front page is a “Front Page Template”. BTW, when I go to the customizer and preview the Superhero theme (also with a post slider) the post slider works just fine. Thank you for any help I can get since I don’t know what to do next.

Superhero https://wordpress.com/themes/hero/ and Hero https://wordpress.com/themes/hero/are two different themes. Click those links and use the correct set up information.

    RATS! I made a mistake.

Superhero https://wordpress.com/themes/hero/ and Hero https://wordpress.com/themes/superhero/ are two different themes. Click those links and use the correct set up information.

Hi timethief, you are wonderful…I say that because you are always so supportive. I believe I’ve followed all the instructions for setting up a post slider using the Hero theme. I’m supposed to tag the post with a tag of my choice (in this case, “featured”). Then tag the specific posts with the same tag. Then add a featured image to the tagged posts. And make sure the page is a Front Page template. I only went to the customizer and checked several other themes (including Superhero) that have a post slider to see if what I had set up would work in other post slider themes. All the other themes that I checked in the customizer that have post sliders showed my post slider working correctly. What am I missing?

    Thank you timethief!

Does that mean you resolved this issue?

If not, do know this. Every theme that has a featured post slider and featured images has different image dimensions for the featured images. If you do not upload on image of the exact dimensions they will not display. Also, know that all themes with featured post sliders do not have the same instructions for enabling them.

    For Hero
The homepage featured post slider has the suggested image dimensions of 960 wide and 350 tall

    For Superhero
The Featured Content image size is at least 960 wide.

I’m going to try uploading pics set to the exact size suggested by the Hero theme. If that works then my problem (with your help) is solved. If not, I’ll be back. Thank you, as always, for your support. Oh, and I love your site, one cool site

Okay, I changed a featured image to 960 by 350 and that didn’t fix the problem. That post still isn’t showing up on the post slider. You know what? I think the problem is with my computer. I went to the Hero demo site and the post slider on that page isn’t working for me either. I checked out my site on another computer (windows 7 internet explorer) and the slider is working perfectly. It’s my new windows 10 and chrome….bleck. I’ll have to go and figure out what setting I need to adjust. THANK YOU timethief.

I’m on a PC running Windows 10 and using FF44. Why don’t you do the free upgrade to Windows 10 and then try using Firefox?

I’m using windows 10/chrome on my personal computer – I checked out the slider on my WP.com via a friend’s computer using windows 7/internet explorer. I just checked out my WP.com on my windows 10 via edge and the slider is again working perfectly. I think this might be a chrome issue. I’m going to clear cookies and try other stuff in chrome and see if that helps. I’ll subscribe to the new thread too.

    Hello marymaude!

I can see your slider too, I’m using Win 8.1 with Chrome. You can try the following steps:

Let us know how it goes. :)

Still unable to get the slider to work – here’s what I’ve tried so far:
I cleared everything from the cache except passwords.
When I checked if I had cookies enabled I received this message: “Great, third party cookies are properly enabled in your browser!”
I uninstalled Chrome, restarted my computer and then reinstalled Chrome.
I disabled all extensions in Chrome.
I checked Adobe Flash Player and read the following message: “Your Google Chrome browser already includes Adobe Flash Player built-in. Google Chrome will automatically update when new versions of Flash Player are available.
I checked under Chrome Help for “Webpage display issues” and decided to use the Chrome Cleanup Tool and received the message: “No programs found.” Which is good.
I’m very open to and grateful for any additional suggestions – thank you, carinapilar.

marymaude, it’s possible that a browser extension or add-ons are blocking something that make the slider work. Could you, please, check if you have any of those in your browser? If so, could you deactivate them temporarily to test?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, I’ve tried that…hey, what browser does WordPress recommend? Maybe that’s the route for me to go since I believe this is just my problem (meaning, something on my computer) and not any bug related to WordPress, Windows 10 or Chrome. BUT just so you know, I’ve checked and the slider works for me with the other free themes – just not Hero. Thank you for trying.

marymaude, we recommend the use of any of the latest versions of browsers on Browse Happy for optimal performance with WordPress.com.

Could you, please, point me a theme where the slider works for you?

    Hi again Carinapilar,
When I use the customizer and try out Superhero the front page post slider works just fine on my Windows 10 computer using Chrome.
    Night, night.
PS but I’m sticking with “Hero”.

marymaude, we tested with different OS and browsers, but we didn’t get the same result… Unfortunately, it’s hard to determine the source of this issue without looking into your computer… Since we weren’t able to replicate the issue, I suggest you use another browser to test the slider.

Let us know if you need any help! :)

I’ve already mentioned the slider works on my windows 10 in Edge and Internet Explorer. Am I misunderstanding something? Is there another browser besides those two that you want me to test the slider in? Night, night & thank you again for helping me.

marymaude, you can use Firefox too. If it works with other browsers, the problem is with your Chrome, maybe something related to Javascript… You can open your site and press F12, to see if there is any error in the Chrome console.
