Hever theme front page

I have been a WordPress user for many years, and have several sites I look after. I am now happily exploring the block editor preparatory to changing themes on two sites.

So I set up a trial site and am exploring using the Hever theme because I want to have three home page column blocks. In the demo these blocks are simply images and text.

When I initially set up the trial site, these 3 blocks became links to blog posts, showing the post featured image and an excerpt. I don’t recall doing anything to make that happen.

Subsequently I activated a couple of other themes to try them out, and then returned to Hever. This time, I don’t see the blog post blocks, but rather the Hever demo graphics & text blocks.

I don’t understand this. Can someone help me with these questions please?

    1. Are there blocks that perform the same function as the old “Latest Post” widgets and automatically show thumbnails and excerpts?

    2. How did Hever theme change the front page from simple column blocks to Latest Post blocks? (Or have I done something I don’t remember?)

    3. Are there also “featured Page” blocks that will show featured image and excerpt without me having to do all that manually?

    4. I want to better understand how to choose a theme. When I first started using WordPress about a decade ago, I first chose a theme purely on the basis of how it looked. Then I realised that layout was more important – e.g. where widget areas were located. Reflecting on the block editor, I’m now wondering whether layout is no longer so important because the block editor plus the design upgrade (which I have) allows a large degree of flexibility. i.e. whatever theme I start with, I can probably change it to look however I want.

Is that a fair conclusion? Is the only real advantage of one theme over another that I have less work to do to get the appearance I want?

Sorry for such a long set of questions, but I really want to understand better. Thanks for any help.

Wordpress put that last sentence there. Actually, the trial blog I am testing on is https://speedtrials74385082.wordpress.com.

  • Hi, most of our newer themes come with some default content. Too many users become confused when they enable a theme and it does not look the same, so we add content automatically when you start a site or switch themes.

You can edit the page and remove what you don’t want, or change it as needed.

    1. There is a posts block. It’s not just “latest” posts but posts you can specify:

    2. By switching themes; we add the default content

    3. I don’t think we have a Featured Page block at this point, but we’ll note the request. Thank you!

    4. Yes that is a fair conclusion and one of several reasons we have moved toward a block editor. There’s more still to come, but that’s a big part of the reasons behind block editing.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks supernovia, that is very helpful.

I was a little confused about the default content and you have explained that.

A featured page block should hopefully be pretty easy as you have the posts block (but what would I know?).

And thanks for confirmation of the greater flexibility WordPress now offers with the block editor. I have found it a steep learning curve, but I am appreciating it.

    Thanks again!
