To remove the “wordpress” from your URL you need to buy a custom domain or map one you already own. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
(And by the way, WordPress.com sites don’t have the “www” prefix, whether you have a free domain or a custom domain.)

You can try with various domain registrars like godaddy, register.com etc. .com extensions are very cheap now

The easiest way to add a domain name to a WordPress.com site (and cheapest) is to use the link kokkieh suggested:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
You can set up automatic renewal which is important: if you forget to renew the domain name you are in danger of losing it or having to pay a lot of money to get it back.
Even if you decide you don’t want to have an automatic renewal, WordPress.com will send you emails to remind you that your domain will expire, about a month ahead of time.
