How do I hide existing comments on 1,400+ blog posts.
Pls don’t tell me how to disable commenting on new or past posts. I have EXISTING comments and I want to hide ALL of them on ALL existing blog posts.

Hey Mark, one thing that comes to mind is that you can hide the comments template using CSS –
/* Hide comments template */ #comments { display: none; }This should hide comments globally across your blog. Note that the comments will still be there, they just will not be rendered by the browser.
If you want to be rid of the comments for good you could delete them. It would be a bit of an undertaking with all of your comments, but you could bulk delete them a page at a time by using the edit comments section in the admin, then set comments to off, globally.

Thanks for your ideas.
I dont have the paid upgrade so I cant do it using CSS. And the HTML would still be there anyway and Google might even penalize me for hiding it.
I dont want to delete them at this time, just hide them to test what happens. Maybe later I might delete them.
My 2c. I think wordpress is awesome but the comments features seem ripe for a radical and complete overhaul.

Hey Mark, no problem. Good point about Google – that would be a lot of stuff to hide.
How about, instead of deleting, setting them all to unapproved?
Still an undertaking, but again, you could run through them with bulk edit in the comments section, and then that you’d still have them in your database until you decide what to do with them.

So, the CSS would definitely have been easier, but this should work better than having to update each post individually:
Bulk Editing Comments
There is not a way to turn comments on or off for all published posts and pages at once. However, you can use the bulk edit feature to change many posts or pages at a time.
Go to the Posts -> All Posts screen in your blog dashboard.
Select the posts you would like to modify or check the box next to “Title” column at the top to select all posts on that page.
Select Edit from the Bulk Actions drop down menu.
Click the Apply button.
Change the options for Comments and Pings to Allow or Do not allow.
Click the Update button.

I should have checked on this–but didn’t. I’m not sure following that process will actually hide existing comments or just disallow future comments. I don’t think it will delete the comments completely, but I didn’t test that either.

I tried that option.
1) The process described is inaccurate. There is no “select all” as in gmail where you can select all posts including those not displaying on the screen. Your have to change the screen options and display 999 posts – I have 14,400+ posts.
2) Then when you click on select all it takes forever. Then doing a bulk edit causes the page to time out or not reload in chrome.
3) Do not allow pings and comments doesnt HIDE the existing comments which is what I want.
I think wp was never designed with 1,400 posts… ie 6-8 years of constant blogging… in mind?

Hey Mark, what about the option to set all of them to unapproved? Not ideal, but it seems to be the only option if you want to hide them, but keep them in the database.

When hiding comments the entire concept should be hidden from visibility… it shouldnt say it’s disabled. Just remove it.

I’m going to tag this thread for staff assistance in case there is something a “Super Admin” can do that we can’t do–or just so people who have some leverage to make changes know about this particular difficulty.

I use wp for my client websites. Ive built a lot of them. I end up having to edit the PHP of the comments.php page and remove all the code. There is no other way to simply turn it all off.

I waited a day and tried again, this time using “all posts” with 400 displaying on the page (I set that on the screen options).
I used bulk edit on the 400 displaying and changed comments to “dont allow”.
It broke with a “goshdarnit it’s all matts fault” error… not a very useful error…

Hi Mark,
There may be some way in which our developers can programmatically hide all of your comments for you, however before I get them involved let me ask: is this an experiment of some sort or are you looking to permanently hide all of your comments (in other words, is this just something you’re checking out and will need for us to reverse in a few days, or is it a change you’re looking to make on your site)?
If this is something which you are looking to permanently put in place, I will find out if there is a way for us to do this for you on our end.

I’d like to keep my wp installation as vanilla as all the others. If there are any customisations on my install pls can you find out and let me know and remove them.
Im not sure if I will remove the comments permanently or not. I want to see how it looks and see what effect it has on visitor activity. So in short yes I might reverse it a bit later.
IMHO this should be a feature… a single tick box on/off… in all wp code.

Since the upgrades have a 30 day refund period – how about buy the CSS upgrade – hide the comments with CSS then get a refund around 25 days
