Hide site title without CSS

  • Unknown's avatar

    Currently using Baskerville 2.

When removing the site title to make way for a custom logo, the title is also removed from the browser tab’s description and the site tagline is displayed instead. Obviously, leaving the site title intact would be silly because that would mean I can’t use a custom logo.

Is there really no way to hide the site title without upgrading to a paid plan to use custom CSS? Seems like a silly restriction.

Hi there, When you want to upload a custom header that includes your site title in the graphic, you can hide your site title and tag line via the Customizer.

Go to your My Site>Customize>Site Identity and remove the check mark next to Display Site Title and Tagline. Then click the Publish button at the top to make those changes go Live.

Let us know if you have any other question.

    Sorry. I don’t think I clarified enough.

I would like to keep the site title and tagline enabled so that the browser tab properly displays the name of my site. Disabling them causes just the tagline to display on the browser tab.

Problem is if I leave the site title enabled, I cannot use a site logo because of redundancy.

I feel like at I’m at an impasse here and will have to sacrifice design for the sake of not having the name of my site displayed on the browser tab.

Hello again, thanks for the additional clarification. Indeed the Baskerville2 demo site shows the same behavior, so I’m not certain this can be changed. Regardless, I’ve gone ahead and tagged this for Staff assistance. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

Hi there, Just coming back to report that on my private test site the Page Title behavior is as expected when using Baskerville2. Both the site title and tagline appear in the browser tab when using a site logo and unchecking their display under Site Identity in the Customizer.

Can you confirm that you presently have your Site Title entered on the appropriate line under Site Identity?

  • Thanks for helping, Jennifer. Just confirming that this site does not have a Site Title set – that’s why it’s always blank in the browser’s title bar, no matter whether “Display site title & tagline” is checked or not.

The Site Title and Tagline cannot currently be shown/hidden independently without custom CSS; they are tied together in the Customizer.

@kathrynwp – Thanks for confirming that the Site title is missing from the Customizer on @orbitstorm’s site

@orbitstorm – unchecking the box next to “Display Site Title and Tagline” in the Customizer’s Site Identity tab keeps them from appearing in the header area of your site so you can use a custom logo or header image. However they will continue to appear in the browser tab and in the underlying HTML so that search engines can read it.

Hope that covers it, but if you have any other question, please let us know.

  • Jennifer – it looks like orbitstorm wants to keep the tagline displayed, as it is currently, which is why I mentioned that the checkbox controls both the site title and tagline at the same time. The only way to hide one and not the other would be with custom CSS.

Yep. Trying to keep the tagline enabled, with the site title hidden, while using a custom logo but also retaining the blog name in the browser tab.

It’s a shame that this can’t be achieved without custom CSS as I’m not sure why the site title being hidden in the design would hide the site name from the browser tab as well. Feels like an unintended design flaw by trying to source too many objects from one output or perhaps an oversight because the current design makes using a header logo pointless.

Is this something that can be overridden by the theme designers (if I were to put in a feature request) or is this something that is simply a permanent issue for the free plan?

Hi again @kathrynwp, I might have misunderstood, but orbitstorm previously mentioned

I would like to keep the site title and tagline enabled so that the browser tab properly displays the name of my site. Disabling them causes just the tagline to display on the browser tab.

And that’s when I went to test and it made me wonder whether orbitstorm had deleted the Site Title from the relevant line in the Customizer. Guess we’ll wait to hear from orbitstorm?

And that’s what I get for not refreshing first. OK then. :)

  • It’s a limitation of the WordPress software itself, and not theme-related, nor plan-related. There is a core ticket for enabling the Site Title and Tagline to be hidden independently, if you’d like to follow and/or comment on it:

    https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/37516

  • I’m not sure why the site title being hidden in the design would hide the site name from the browser tab as well.

Just to clarify – this not the case. Hiding the site title from the front end by unchecking “Display site title & tagline” does not remove the title from the browser tab.

  • Unknown's avatar

@kathrynwp – Strangely enough, it does remove the title from the tab for me, both when removing the title from the site title field and when unchecking “Display site title & tagline”. I’ve tried refreshing a few times, clearing the browser cache, etc and still have the same results.

Just not my day, I suppose.. lol

  • orbitstorm – hmm. In order to test this, you do first need to add a Site Title in the Customizer. Could you please add one right now, uncheck the box, and let me know so I can take a look?

  • Unknown's avatar

@kathrynwp – that did the trick. I wasn’t aware that I needed to have text in the site title field. Previously, I only had text in the tagline field.

Suppose I’ll just do without the tagline for now, or perhaps embed it into the header.

Thanks for your time and for linking me to the ticket.

Also, thank you @justjennifer for lending a hand as well!

Right – sorry I didn’t make that clearer earlier!

Just let us know if you need help with anything else.

Glad to see we got this worked out in the end. :)

    Best wishes
