Hiding Categories

Searched for this topic and couldn’t find an answer. Is there a way to hide certain categories on the category list on your main page? I want to hide some just so the list is shorter for readers but have them still be available (mostly for my own use).
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I changed my categories widget to be a drop down box, for exactly that reason, it was getting too long. They are all there, but… you have to click on the box.
Appearance/widgets/edit the category widget, click on “Show as dropdown”…

The categories widget does have a dropdown as stated above > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/ It does not provide a means of “hiding” Categories.
If you need to display only some of your categories you can build a Custom Menu and add only the Categories pages you want to display to it. Then display them in a custom menu widget.
