Hiding Catergories
-
Hi there,
I think I am trying to achieve something which is not possible, however I would like to ask.
As you can see from our blog we have a good number of reviews now. We would like to be able to access these alphabetically. I wanted a page of links simply saying A, B, C blah de blah and liking to all films in the relevant letter catergory. This itself is possible.
What I want to avoid is a huge list of alphabetical catergories in my sidebar. I want to do is the equivalant of making invisible catergories. So I can go to filmsapoi.wordpress.com/catergory/a exist but it does not appear in the catergories sidebar.
Like I say, I don’t really think this is possible.
Wonder if somebody could say anything about it or have any alternative ideas.
Many Thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You might try setting the categories as children of another category and then in the categories widget make sure that “show hierarchy” is NOT selected and see if that hides them. It may not.
-
@forgery: You cannot exclude categories from the sidebar. But you can very well use A,B,C etc. tags instead.
And please paste the exact URL of your blog when asking questions here – or link your nickname to your blog as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know.

@forgery:
I’ts 4 am and I may be dreaming, but I don’t see why you can’t have a page of alphabetical links to your films.
You are not using a tag cloud right, so go back and assign a letter tag to each film.
Here is a link to one of your existing tags:
<a href="http://filmsapoi.wordpress.com/tag/superhero/">Superhero Films</a>
But if you substitute “A” for “superhero” and “Films Starting with A” for “Superhero Films” then you’d link to all the films in your tag “A”
Then write code for “B” “C” etc. and put them into a list on a page say, “Films We’ve Reviewed”
I think that would work. -
Wow!! I didn’t realise you could do that with tags! I did try clicking on tags but it showed all posts from wordpress with that tag! relating it to just our own website works! That’s fantastic
Sorry for not posting my site, when I wrote the inital post it let me state my website, then doesn’t display it on the actual post. I thought it was already going to be there. I’ll know for next time!
Many, many thanks

forgery,
The use of tags and categories is very powerful on WordPress.com.
1. The tags (and categories) under posts (or sometimes over the posts, depending on the theme) connect readers to the WordPress global tags. They take people away from your blog; but they also connect you to people writing about the same things as you, and they can bring people to your blog. Search engines can find your blog with tags and cats as well.
2. The screening is meant to distinguish between wp.COM and wp.ORG blog users. .COM and .ORG are different from each other, and answers for one don’t always apply to the other. The system needs a little work, and you still need to write a link.
Or better yet—link your name to your blog:
“Go into your dashboard -> users -> your profile -> then scroll down to ‘contact info’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your blog and save the changes.
Now… when you comment here and on other blogs, your name will link to your blog. If you do this before you post your request for help, it will allow forum volunteers to be able to help you quicker since they won’t have to ask you for a link and wait until you come back to post one.”
