Hiding file names from photos in a gallery

    I’m building a new website to hold portfolios of my art. I created a page and added several galleries on that page. When I click on a photo to go through the pictures, my very ugly file name appears below the photo. I don’t want it to show. Neither do I want the photo exposure etc info to show.

    However, I would like to add the name of the piece and other pertinent details, but don’t want it to be overlaid on the photo. I thought I could do that in the comments, but it doesn’t seem to allow the comment to be posted.

    Is the comment the best way to associate this info about the piece of art?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Where exactly are you seeing those details on the site. I clicked on Portfolio and see Artist in Residence at Montezuma Castle. There are tags displayed there. If you don’t want to display the tags associated with the post you can edit that in the Customizer.

    staff-zinnia,

    When I click on a photo to go through the pictures, my very ugly file name appears below the photo. I don’t want it to show. Neither do I want the photo exposure etc info to show.

    I think @apohfibg is referring here to the file names of images that haven’t been given titles that display below the images in a gallery carousel, and the photo metadata that appears with each image in the carousel if meta data hasn’t been disabled at WP Admin Media Settings page, as described in the Image Gallery Carousel section of Media Settings support page. @apohfibg has evidently disabled the carousel option since submit this support request.

    However, I would like to add the name of the piece and other pertinent details, but don’t want it to be overlaid on the photo.

    On the Rebalance theme, when galleries are created using the WordPress (Block) Editor, a caption on an image is apparently automatically displayed over the image rather than below. I wasn’t able to find a way of moving the caption on that editor. However, on the old WP-Admin editor, captions display below the images in a gallery on Rebalance.

    I thought I could do that in the comments, but it doesn’t seem to allow the comment to be posted.

    I believe she’s referring to the “Comment” option that appears below each image in a gallery carousel.

    Thank you for your response. I need to chew on this for a while–I am learning more each time I work on the site, but it’s slow going. Your response is very clear–hope I can find the menus to make the changes you suggested.

    I did change to Rebalance from another theme. The captions look different, no longer white. Now they fade into the photo but are barely discernible. I have shortened the longer ones and I may just leave them up if I can change the font color. Possible?

    I have created a portfolio page with several portfolios by topic, all on one page. The photos have overlying captions when looking at the overview of the portfolios, but when I click on a photo and go through the photos in the carousel, there is no sign of the caption. Is this the way it has to be, or are there options to turn on/off?

    I will no doubt be posting again until I get these working as I want.

    I will see what I can do. Thanks, Musicdoc1!

    This is possible, would you please give us a link to a specific post or page where you have a captioned image?

    Captions should appear, would you please give a link to a gallery where this is failing and let us know which image we should see the caption under?

    Here is the portfolio page. https://quiltingtheland.wordpress.com/home/portfolio-2/
    I am hoping to have a static front page with the various topic portfolios shown with a feature image. I don’t know if I will need separate pages for each portfolio, or the portfolios can be taken from the single page.

    Still looking for menu to disable the metadata.

    Thanks!

    Ok, to change the color of the caption there, you’ll need a paid Premium plan or higher so you can modify CSS: https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

    Then, just add this to your custom CSS:

    .wp-block-gallery .blocks-gallery-item figcaption {
        color: #000;
    }

    (and adjust the color as desired)

    As for the caption in the carousel, I’m sorry you’re right, we don’t display those there. I was thinking of the title, which you can change by editing the image on the media library: https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/

    Still looking for menu to disable the metadata.

    It’s in the WP Admin Media Settings page, under Image Gallery Carousel. Your WP Admin Media Settings page is here: https://quiltingtheland.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-media.php. I was unable to find a corresponding setting for this in the My Sites interface.

    when I click on a photo and go through the photos in the carousel, there is no sign of the caption. Is this the way it has to be, or are there options to turn on/off?

    On my test site, with Rebalance applied, captions do not display in a gallery carousel when the gallery is created using the block editor, as indicated by staff-blorbo. They do display when created or edited using the classic and WP-admin editors.

    OK. So far, I have disabled the metadata on some of my galleries, should be able to do that for the rest of them if what I have done so far hasn’t already done it. Good!

    I am also in the process of changing the names of the images on the media section.

    I used the link you provided to the Admin media settings–thanks so much! I hope I can find my way back there from my website and not have to rely on your link in this post.

    So I think this problem is solved, though I do have others that are pending.
    Thanks a lot Musicdoc1 and MacManx!

    You’re welcome!

    I have disabled the metadata on some of my galleries
    Unchecking the box labeled “Show photo metadata (Exif) in carousel, when available” will disable photo metadata for the whole site.

    I hope I can find my way back there from my website and not have to rely on your link in this post.
    You might want to create a bookmark for the WP-Admin Media Settings page.
