Hiding Site

It seems WP used to have a privacy setting called ‘Hidden,’ were only those with the URL could view the site, but no password was required. That is what I need (hidden, but no password/no need to invite specific users). It seems this is no longer available? I see there are plug-ins for making the site hidden, but the personal package does not support plug-ins. All I really need is the Personal package + ability to make site hidden. Anyway to do this? (I realize there is a checkbox to indicate the site should not be followed by search engines, but the comments indicate it is not necessarily honored by the search engines). Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there, just adding that the setting you mentioned about not allowing search engines is the same as the previously named “Hidden” setting and it was always the case that some search engine crawl bots do not respect that setting.

The only way to truly make your site available to humans without being crawled by search engines is to make it Private and invite Viewers.

Hi. Thank you both for replying to my inquiry. I really appreciate it. I’m not sure any of the WordPress privacy options are what I’m looking for… Given that search engines may not honor my “do not follow” request, my next best option would be a splash page that required a user name and log-in to enter the site. BUT, I don’t want the user to enter into a wordpress dashboard/wordpress environment. I just want a splashpage that gates entry/prompts for UN and PW, and once UN and PW are entered, my site home page is presented. Is that possible with FREE or PERSONAL options of WP? Thank you very much!

  • We don’t have a splash page option for it, but you can make your site private: https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/

Thank you very much. I’ve read that article in the past, and now again, but am not clear re what the user experience would be or if this meets my needs. Perhaps you can advise. Here’s what I am doing/want to do…

We have a vacation rental. I want to create an online guest guide (site) that provides guests with information about the property once they are there, things like: use of washing machine/dryer, WIFI access, using the fire pit, using the TV, etc. (Guests should be able to VIEW the site only, not edit) BUT…
    a) I don’t want to have the site accessible to people who aren’t guests
    b) I need all 2-6 guests to be able to access the site using the same password (we don’t log each guest’s email, etc.–just the person that reserved the home–so it is impractical for me to issue each guest a password)
    c) I don’t want them to enter through a WordPress Admin dashboard if that is what happens using “Private” (that would not be a good guest experience)–just be presented with a login page when they hit my URL, and then the site homepage is revealed to them upon successful login.
Note: I would not need password protection if I could confidently hide the site, but I know not all search engines honor the request not to follow.

Q1: Will “Private” allow me to do this? If not, is there a WP solution?
Q2: If so, do I need to mark the individual pages private as well, or does making the site setting “Private” cover all the pages having that root domain?

    Thank you.

  • Hi there,

What you can do I make the site private (this makes all pages private) and then create another WordPress.com account and invite them as a Viewer.

    https://wordpress.com/support/user-roles/#viewer

This way you can give your guest a username and a password to log in and view the site. They won’t have any editing capabilities.

However, they’ll still be able to view the site on their devices (phones, laptop) even when they leave

If that works for you, then you can try setting it up. Else, you’ll need to use a plugin that grants access to the site for a defined period of time.

Hi. Thank you for the help. That worked out pretty well. FWIW, I would have found it helpful if the support pages showed examples of the gate page and the login screen. For others that might have this question, this is what they contain (I tried to post a pic, but seems I can’t/don’t know how in this form).

    GATE PAGE CONTENT
This site is marked private by its owner. If you would like to view it, you’ll need two things:

    1. A WordPress.com account.
Don’t have an account? All you need is an email address and password — register here!
    2. Permission from the site owner. Once you’ve created an account, log in and revisit this screen to request an invite.

If you already have both of these, great! **which an invited user does**
    [LOG-IN HERE]

    LOG-IN PAGE
    Email Address or User Name
[ field to enter email or user name]
    [Continue Button]
    OR
    [Continue with Google button]
    [Continue with Apple button]

Once you enter the user name, the user is presented with a page to request the Password. Once password is entered, the site homepage appears to the user.

    Nice idea @fstat! Bookmarked.

Since you’d control the second account yourself, if you’d prefer your guests to no longer have access to your site once they leave, you could change that second account’s password. Simple enough!
