High frequency spam commenter

How do I block a commenter? I’ve got a very high frequency commenter, and yes the blacklist feature shoves every comment into the spam queue, but it’s really creeping me out that this one person/ip address is blasting me this way and I’d like to block that ip address. How do I do that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can’t. Either make the blog private or accept that reality because there is no means of blocking anyone on the internet from access any public blog and submitting comments if and when comments are open.

We cannot block or delete subscribers from public blogs. Anyone and everyone can access public blogs and that’s indeed what the public designation means. However, please read this about public blogs that become private blogs > Blog Privacy and Subscribers > http://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/blog-privacy-and-subscribers/

Mark only spam as spam http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/01/24/mark-only-spam-as-spam/ and delete all troll comments. http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/03/27/how-to-starve-a-troll/

For trolls, you can “blacklist” them at Settings > Discussion toward the bottom of that page. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website URL. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog. Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that.

Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. In fact for over a decade only about 30% of us have IPs that trace back to any individual computer. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

Thanks. How unfortunate. Good information to know that WordPress is not set up to block individuals.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

    You’re welcome.

P.S.I had 2 trolls blast both of my blogs for 2 years running. They finally gave up.

If the spam comments are going to spam, I’m not seeing the problem here.

Thank you for your observation, raincoaster.

I honestly have limited time for the workload involved in manually reviewing the volume of comments involved, and have seen comments that are not actually spam caught in my spam filter (which is why I had not had it set to strict, and was doing my readers the service of ensuring they were heard). It is entirely a personal matter for me, of course; I don’t care to be forced to deal with someone’s attention-getting behaviors; the lack of basic respect, consideration, and simple observation of reasonable boundaries is an affront. It pains me to do so, however it seems clear that setting the spam filter to strict, and requiring an email address is a timely change.

(Before it comes up, no, I don’t plan on ‘growing a thicker skin’. lol. I’d prefer to gently invest in living in a more pleasant world, and for me that includes excluding individuals who does not respect my boundaries from participating in my experience, when necessary to take care of me.)

Thank you both for replying. I value your insights, and I have made changes to my settings. :-)

I haven’t manually reviewed spam in years. I did for the first few months, but as you point out, time is precious.
