hijacked by ask.com
-
For about a month now, when I am writing a post I will click on “Preview Post” but instead of seeing my post, it gets hijacked to http://www.search.ask.com
I have googled this. I have installed and run anti-spy ware.
I use mozilla firefox. I have checked all my settings.
Help, anyone?

Do you have third party cookies enabled on your browser? It doesn’t sound like you do to me and unless or until you enable them you will experience a host of issues http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

Thanks for your response. Will you please work through what follows and report back your results to us?
1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.
2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html
3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/
(a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:
http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/safari-ipad-clear-cache.htm
http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/How-To-Clear-Browsing-Data-In-Chrome-For-Ipad_6.htm(b) Make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled

4. Try using another browser.
5. If you are not successful let us know:
(a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.

Hi there TimeThief,
I have gone through your very thorough list and done everything I could.
1. I found a work-around for the time being. If I go to “ALL POSTS” and ‘view’ one that I have already published, it seems to set it up so that when I write a new post and ‘preview’, it works properly! yay!
2. I am using Firefox (I can’t use IE anymore)
3. I am on a Toshiba laptop.4. I don’t get any error message, it just goes to ‘search.ask.com/blah blah
So I will use my work-around…I don’t want to give both of us a headache.
I know I saw other stuff in Google-land where people complained of ask.com hijacking…I will continue looking thru that info as well.thank you

Just curious if you have tried posting from another computer? If it works fine, then something on your pc is causing the issue and you will need to have that resolved.

This sounds like a browser extension/add-on. Several years ago I recall something like that being added to my browser when I downloaded a video player or something similar, and it was really annoying and unexpected.
Can you try using a different browser (since you are using Firefox, perhaps try Chrome, available at http://browsehappy.com ), and see if that changes things? You might also try disabling all of your Firefox extensions to see if that helps.

dl -yes it does it on other computers
jackiedana – I don’t have any extension / add ons.
Chrome wasn’t working out for me.
-
Sometimes extensions or add on’s are added in the background or when you update other software – had my browser trashed when I updated a file backup program – it installed some crap on my PC and changed the settings on my browser – took well over an hour to fix and uninstall several things

It looked like there could be an issue with the Preview button directing to a non-existent link, but when I updated your test post, I couldn’t reproduce it, nor could a colleague. If this issue persists, please let me know. If you can capture the link that the Preview button is sending you (which is a page not found) that would be super helpful as well.

Hi SueAnn,
Sounds like someone recently installed iMesh on your computer, and iMesh for a period of time was causing that redirect. Fortunately, the fix is simple; just perform a reset of Firefox search defaults by following the easy steps at the bottom of this article:

If I can help with anything else, please feel free to get in touch via any of the ‘contact’ links in our Help Center.
Best regards,
Eric
