History and revisions
-
For the second time in a week I’ve spent two hours working on revisions and adding illustrations to a page, pressing UPDATE every 15 minutes, only to end up with a blank page and the HISTORY only gives revisions well over an hour ago, and none of the uploaded pictures appear in the media library. I’ve been using this for 6 or 7 years intensivley and this never happened before. All I could do was LOAD the page as it was an hour ago and put down an hour totally wasted time.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi peterviney,
Oh! What is the name of the post or page where content is missing? Did you close the page, then open it and find content missing?
If manually saved changes aren’t there and photos didn’t upload to the Media Library, that suggests your internet connection may have been unstable around the time you were working on peterviney.wordpress.com — which can result in changes not being saved. The fact that the same problem occurred in two separate areas of the site leads me to think internet connection is the most likely explanation.
With the post or page, is there any chance you had the same one open in another tab? If so, the blank post could have autosaved over the one you were working on after it was closed.

Thanks to both. In retrospect, in both cases I had copied and pasted an illustration in rather than using the normal method of ADD MEDIA, drag into the media library, press INSERT. I wonder if this was the cause. I kept updating every ten minutes but the update box moved very slowly. I do have (normally) a good broadband connection.

Yikes. Thanks for these reports. @napanista had you also copied and pasted media in?
Can you also each let us know:
– which editor you’re using (we have a few, so sending a link to the editing page may be best)
– what browser you are using
– whether there’s a chance you had multiple tabs / browsers open to the same editing page
We’ll try to duplicate this here.

Safari. No multiple tabs open. I haven’t changed to the latest editor that’s being trialled. It’s the one with UPDATES in cerise in the top right. If I access through the existing pages, I get an older editor with updates at the foot. I was using the one with UPDATES in cerise. I’m reluctant to link openly on line to my editing page.

Thanks, I’m testing that editor now in Chrome.
in both cases I had copied and pasted an illustration in rather than using the normal method of ADD MEDIA, drag into the media library, press INSERT.
Can you tell me more about the specific steps you use there, including what clicks or keystrokes you’re using to copy and paste, where you’re copying from, etc? Sorry to have you spell it out; I’m just hoping if we use the very same steps, we can duplicate it and thus find an answer.
Also, do you regularly use those steps without problems?

I usually use Add Media. I may have cut and pasted a few times, on a Mac. Cutting illustrations from an existing WORD document, using COMMAND – X / COMMAND – V. But on both the problem sessions I had cut and pasted. Early afternoon in a housing area when our internet is at its strongest. No one else in the house was online.

Thank you for that detail. That seems to be it – I can replicate this issue exactly when pasting images into a post in Safari.
Interestingly, though, it doesn’t seem possible to paste an image that way in either Chrome or Firefox, so it looks like this might be an issue with an action being possible in Safari that shouldn’t be, rather than an editor issue as such.
Regardless, I’m reporting this to our developers to look into. In the meantime, please use the Add Media button instead, or drag the image from the doc into the editor rather than copy/cut-pasting it.
