  how do I add a hit counter to my site after I copy and paste the code?

  There are code restrictions here at WordPress.COM so exactly which “hit counter” are you trying to install please?

  If I could see the code for the one you want I could say yes you can use it or no you can’t. The bottom line is we cannot use JavaScript counters.

  All you need to do is post it between code tags. If it says “script” in it don’t bother because you won’t be able to use it.
