hits not adding up right

  Currently my blog hit counter registers 43,977. If I look on my dashboard stats under “Summary Tables” it tells me that I received 15,786 hits in 2008 (my first year) for the blog and 32,456 for 2009 (so far). If I add these up, it equals 48,242. So am I at 43K or 48K? What’s the reason for the discrepancy? Thanks.
