  Do you have any recommendations on where to start? Ideally, I would like to trial / understand the features before commiting to migration.

  Hello!

  One way of doing a trial on WordPress.com is to create a free website and experiment with that. By default, free sites are set to be private. Whatever you do remains private unless you decide you want the site to be public.

  To do a something like a trial with the paid plans, you would need to pay in advance and then take advantage of the refund policy if you decide not to continue.

  You can purchase a paid plan and then transfer or map your domain later when/if you decide to make your WordPress.com site your live site.

  If you are looking for feature-parity with a self-hosted site that uses plugins, the Business plan is the entry point for that level of customization.
