*.home.blog vs *.wordpress.com

    Hello,

When creating a new free website and selecting only the “Share ideas, experiences, updates, reviews, stories, videos, or photos”, I am only presented with an option to use the *.home.blog domain.

However, if I select “Share ideas, experiences, updates, reviews, stories, videos, or photos” plus any other goal, I get the *.wordpress.com option.

I am testing this with a random url that I know is not being used.
    Example:
    helloqwertyworld.home.blog
    vs
    helloqwertyworld.wordpress.com

    Steps to reproduce:
    (Precondition: I’m using Google Chrome)

    1. Navigate to https://wordpress.com/start/about
    2. Populate the first 2 input fields and select only “Share ideas, experiences, updates, reviews, stories, videos, or photos” as the website goal
    3. Click “continue”
    4. Populate the domain/url with “helloqwertyworld”
    5. Do not actually create the site

Notice that helloqwertyworld.wordpress.com is not an option

The same can be seen when selecting “Start with blog” from https://wordpress.com/start/subdomain/design-type-with-store-nux.

Is this a feature or am I missing something? I understand these are optional settings, but I haven’t found documentation around the Website Goal selection affecting the subdomain options you get for the free website plan. If there are, can you please point me to them?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi there,

Under certain conditions, like the ones you mention in your post, we suggest an alternative to a free WordPress.com subdomain that we think would be a better fit – there are other options beside just home.blog. We’re testing the impact of offering these alternative subdomains for this flow, which is why it’s not documented publicly yet.
