  Hello. When I choose a specific “theme” from the examples wordpress displays then add content to my home page it never looks like the example page, but simply like a blog post. How can I get my home page to look as unique as the examples?

  Depends on the theme. Most themes display your latest posts by default, but some themes have additional features such as a posts slider or a unique homepage template. You can find instructions for all themes here:
