Home page

Now I have really screwed up! I was trying to fix my widgets and followed instructions to check for HTML tags. This is what I did
Go to Settings -> Reading in your blog’s dashboard and temporarily change the Blog pages: show at most option to 1.
Visit the front page of your blog.
Use the next/previous links (at the bottom of the pages) to navigate backwards through your posts. If every post has the sidebar issue, this most likely means that it is caused by something in your sidebar (any text widgets you may be using which include HTML code). If only some posts suffer from the problem, it is most likely caused by the content in those particular posts.
Once you narrow it down to a post, go to Posts -> All Posts and click on the post you want to edit. Click on the Text tab of your editing window and look for any extra HTML tags. The most common tags known to cause the problem are <div> tags:
Remove all <div> tags from the post content.
There wasn’t any <div> tags so I put settings back to the way they were but my home page is starting with “contact” and shows all the pages on one. I am so lost. I did a previous (autosave) from 2 weeks ago but going back to that it didn’t fix my problem.
Help pleaseThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I just googled my site and now that homepage has the “edit” showing in public so anyone can change it now. I am about ready to just delete the whole site and give up. It has me beat!

Hi there,
Allow me to help :)
I just googled my site and now that homepage has the “edit” showing in public so anyone can change it now.
I just visited your site and can’t see any edit link. It won’t show up to any readers. You can see the edit link because you are logged in when visiting the homepage, and as an admin, you get to see the edit link. The rest of us won’t.
Let me check your site for the HTML issue and will let you know the result soon.

Found the issue with your sidebar.
In your custom CSS, you have this:
#sidebar { width:20em; border-top:1px solid #d1d9dc; margin:0 0 1em; padding:1em 0 0; }Try changing width:60em to width:20em, and the sidebar will return to the right side of the site.

I did log out and shut down then google chrome my name and got on that way and saw the “edit”
-
Sorry, I pasted the wrong code. Disregard my previous message.
Your actual, current custom CSS is this:
#sidebar { width:60em; border-top:1px solid #d1d9dc; margin:0 0 1em; padding:1em 0 0; }Change the width:60em; part to width:20em;

In that case, your browser was probably serving you a cached version (an old version of the page it has saved before, to make it load faster for you). I can guarantee you that WordPress does not give edit links to regular visitors. There would be riots if it did!

To change the sidebar setting that I mentioned above, you will need to open the custom CSS box.
In your dashboard, go to Appearance -> Customize -> Custom CSS (the Custom CSS option is on the right side).
Once you open the Custom CSS box, you should see the code I pasted above. Do the text change, and then save it.

Thankyou I was able to find it and do what you said and it is back. to the right sidebar. However I still don’t know how to get my original homepage back. It mus have something to do with what I did in : appearance>reading> Show at most was: originally was 10 and I changed it to 1 couldn’t find the rest of the instructions so went back to <reading> changed it back to 10 and saved it. but it didn’t revert back to original.

For your homepage, it’s probably the “Front page displays” option that causes it.
The option is available in Settings -> Reading.
I’m not sure what you want to display on your home page, so perhaps try choosing the “Your latest posts” option and save it, see if it fixes thing up.
-
I did the Your latest posts and it took out all but the widgets however when I previewed the page it showed my original posting which is what I wanted. I then logged out and went to the site publicly and the page is blank. I went back to dashboard >pages>no title> edit , saw the correct posting there then I published it. shut down and went back to public page and it is blank.
When I first went to do all at the beginning, I went to reading and it showed “static” selected that was before I did anything. I don’t know what that means but wonder if it has something to do with the blank
BTW I thankyou very much for your help and patience! -
Hi there, you have one post published, and it is set to private (private posts do not show up to the public). Since you have no content in that post, open it in the editor and set it back to Public (Publish module at upper right). Add a few lines of text and the update the post and visit your site and you will see the post.

Hi there
I finally did it and homepage is back to normal!!! settings>read> selected “static” selected page I want and all come back. Thankyou so much for all your help. I am now afraid to try anything new in case I screw it up again but I did learn tonight.
One question if I go to the custom CCS box and down to the sidebar what label will change the font to make it larger I am afraid to touch anything as I don’t know what they do.
Thanks -
