Home page/archives thing still not resolved

10 years ago a WP.com staffer said they were working on resolving the confusion of “Home page/archives” showing in stats as well as your static home page. But they still haven’t! WTF?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

BTW, I don’t need help with my blog. I need WP.com to explain themselves.

Hello! I get what you’re seeing, and I totally understand how that can be confusing. You’re not alone in noticing both a “Home page/Archives” entry and your static front page showing separately in your stats.

Here’s what’s happening: when you set a static front page, WordPress.com treats that page as its own individual entry in stats. Meanwhile, the “Home page/Archives” entry includes visits to your:

    • Homepage (in dynamic blog-style setups)
    • Category, tag, author, and date-based archive pages
    • Posts page, if you’ve set one
    • Shop page (if WooCommerce is active)

These get grouped together under that one label. So even if you have a custom front page, archive-type pages still exist behind the scenes and contribute to the “Home page/Archives” number.

You can find more details in this guide: How Posts & Pages Traffic is Calculated.

Let me know if that makes sense or if anything is still unclear. Happy to help!

Thanks, but the thing is, I don’t have anything in any of those four categories. Can I get a reply from a WP.com staffer?

  • Hey! Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I reviewed your site and confirmed there are multiple pages in the second category (Category, tag, author, and date-based archive pages).

As long as there are posts on your site, there will be author and date-based archive pages created by default. I see you have a couple of post categories and tags and these have archive pages generated as well.

Basically, visits to these archive pages are being logged under the Home page / Archives entry. However I understand this isn’t ideal and could be confusing.

While the issue has already been reported as you mentioned, bug reports are typically addressed on severity, so an immediate fix is unlikely. While we do not have an exact timeline for a fix, I can assure you that it’s on our radar. We will reach out over email once the issue is fixed or we have more updates. Thanks for your continued patience!
