  my home page message doubles up – it appears on the correct home page but if that page is scrolled down, the same wording is repeated but with a different background.

  The Pique theme is a great theme for businesses, but it does take a little effort to set it up to best advantage. You can learn more about setting up the theme on it’s Showcase Page https://wordpress.com/themes/pique/

  As far as the message being doubled, it looks like you may have added another panel/page with that same text as on the front page panel.
