Hello!
Thanks for posting.
If you’re referring to the overlay grey colour on your featured image, you can try changing that.
If your plan allows to edit your Additional CSS area, here’s how you can make that change:
1) From your wp-admin area go to Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS
2) Copy and paste the following CSS code.
body:not(.no-header-image) .custom-header-image::before, .lodestar-front-page .custom-header-image::before { background: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); /* Changing to solid white from original translucent grey rgba(0,0,0,.5); */ }3) Click Save and reload your page to see the changes.
If you don’t have access to the Additional CSS area, you’ll need to work with the styles your Lodestar theme gives you. Or, you can try a different theme.
I hope that helps.
Shout if you have any more questions :-)

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your help! I have to pay $96 per year for the ability to change the CSS code. Initially the page didn’t have a gray overlap, this happened last year, not sure what caused it? I’m considering upgrading to the $4 a month plan so I can add the domain name that I bought…would this give me access.
If I don’t want to spend an additional $100 a year to get rid of the gray overlay…do you think I’ll loose all of my home page info+pics+videos if I change the style? And if the style doesn’t work, I don’t have the time to re-work the entire website with a different theme.
Thanks for your help! Wish it was an easier fix and that the software would have stayed consistent to begin with.

Hi there,
Just to clarify, Mark is a a fellow WordPress.com site owner and volunteer, so he’s not a member of staff or part of setting any policy here. Also @marklchaves, thanks for your help!

The Lodestar theme has had this image overlay since the time the theme was launched. You can see here in the launch announcement from 2017 that the image behind the site title has a dark tint to it as well. My guess here is that the overlay was added by the theme designers because the site text is white, and that can sometimes be illegible if the background image is not dark enough, imagine if it was a background of a snowy winter scene for example.
In any event, since it’s designed into the theme (hard coded) there is not a setting available to change it without upgrading.
It is possible to use CSS (included in the Premium plan) to make a targeted change however, which is what Mark was suggesting. That ability is not included in the Personal plan though, so you would need to upgrade one level higher to access that.
If I don’t want to spend an additional $100 a year to get rid of the gray overlay…do you think I’ll loose all of my home page info+pics+videos if I change the style? And if the style doesn’t work, I don’t have the time to re-work the entire website with a different theme.
Upgrading to the Premium plan will not change the outward appearance of your site at all. It just adds new tools and abilities that you do not have at the moment. So from that standpoint it would not add any extra work for you.
All you would need to do (after you upgrade) is to copy and paste the code that Mark provided above into your CSS settings box, and save your changes. Here’s a preview of how that would look in case you are curious what the new CSS code will do:
Hope this helps!

Thank you for your clarification + your time in helping me out with this. I really didn’t see the gray overlay on my home page images until 2020; otherwise, I wouldn’t be confused about it. Maybe it was anomaly for my individual site. It looks like my options are an upgrade or re-structuring the site. I appreciate the clarity now and I can move forward with either of those solutions. Thank you again for your help in this!
