Home page I can't edit
-
I have a home page that I do not seem to be able to edit, and that I didn’t create – came with the template/theme ….. this home page doesn’t appear in my list of pages when I hit “Pages” in the dashboard ….
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s the blog. That’s where your Posts go, as opposed to your Pages. Create some posts and you’ll see it fill up. You can’t edit it per se, because it’s not a Page.
-
That is your blogging page which displays all of your posts in reverse chronological order. Each time you write a post, that page automatically updates.
It is different from your regular static pages. You cannot edit it from the pages menu on your dashboard.

Thanks for your helpful comments. I see now that what I wanted was to have the posts page not be the home page – I wanted a static home page, and it describes on the WordPress site how to change the home page to a static one

If you want to change the default front page to a static front page then you must create two Pages. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ One will be for the front Page titled whatever you want like Welcome, for example and one will be for your posts to display on, titled for example, Posts.
After you do that then you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
