‘Home page’ looks horribly vertical on mobile. Why?
-
Hi there
I’m really unsure how to fix this issue.
I’m quite good at fixing these type of things via google, but google isnt helping atm!
Only my websites ‘home page’ looks horrible and vertical / one line on mobile browser. The rest of the pages are fine. This should show you what I mean.
And this shows you the home page slightly different on ‘mobile view’ via the ‘wordpress’ website.
cheers

Hi there, I noticed that when I examine the layout of your Homepage, you seem to have added your content so it is grouped within the middle column of a columns block.
This is causing the text to be constrained within the column as the view gets smaller and smaller, as it does with a mobile phone. Instead you will want to make move your text outside of the columns block (which is causing the text to go too narrow) and that will restore the width.
This is difficult to explain in words so here is a video showing what I mean: Video here
In my video I show the first block of text, and how moving it out of the columns block makes it wider. However, further down the page (you can see if you explore in list view on the left) are also nested within columns as well. I would recommend that you experiment with moving them all out of the columns block and see if this helps. Nesting block this deeply can result in some odd behaviour that is difficult to troubleshoot like this.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

@staff-totoro thank you for bringing light to what is causing the issue!
However there is a reason why I had ‘paragraph blocks within columns’ in the first place.
Unsure if you remember a previous issue/post of mine with ‘Attempt block recovery‘ for my paragraph blocks with ‘Overpass font‘??
I was recommended by you and your colleagues where ‘Overpass font‘ was not working well when added from ‘paragraph blocks’ (for some reason), so was advised to put them inside ‘Columns’ and change the font from the columns instead of the para blocks.
If I now need to remove paragraph blocks from the columns, would this now lead me back to square 1? Has this been fixed as you said engineers would take a look at?
My only gripe with the fix in this thread is having to move the paragraph blocks out of my columns, which in turn, as you can probably understand, messes the look of the page; margins, layout etc etc. Will take some re-working I believe! Thanks as always

Hey there,
How interesting… two steps forward.. one step back it seems…
If I now need to remove paragraph blocks from the columns, would this now lead me back to square 1? Has this been fixed as you said engineers would take a look at?
In theory yes… you would be back to square one, but I wonder if there’s a block configuration that would negate this.
The bug is still being worked on as we speak.
Would you be willing to create a test homepage, so that we can see how best to put together a work around.
Many thanks.

What type of workaround would you look at may I ask?
Would you not just create a ‘test home page’ on your end, apply ‘Overpass‘ font to some paragraph blocks, and see if ‘Attempt block recovery‘ occurs (original issue) / try fix the columns issue/ what I’m currently facing?
Basically, I’ve just finished spending 1 month re-working my website for my portfolio/3D work. And so I’ve started re-applying for jobs again and direct companies to said website.
I dont really want to start messing with it again, removing/diverting pages etc etc.
I’m happy to see if this can be sorted in the evening (when recruiters are less likely to check emails/my website application etc)?? But i’d have to undo it to default the next day.At the end of the day, most recruiters should hopefully look at my site on Desktop, not mobile. But of course I’d still like to find a fix for mobile at some point!
Cheers

Hey there,

That would be one of the tests we’d run – but ultimately we’d look to keep the same structure using a different block that’s capable of columns (a Layout block for example).
Really that would entail, inserting a layout block, and dragging existing blocks out of columns and in to the layout columns block – rather than a new build of a page.
At the end of the day, most recruiters should hopefully look at my site on Desktop, not mobile. But of course I’d still like to find a fix for mobile at some point!
Totally! I totally get this.

I’m currently dealing with wordpress support (as i’m now a new personal plan member) and they said to keep this issue with them via email.
I guess we can close this ticket, but I’ll carry on looking for a resolution with them via email…!
