Home page menu layout
-
Hello,
Why is my menu all bunched up on the homepage and not on other pages in my site. Also, why won’t some of the child pages show under the parent pages even after I list them there, i.e. the calendar is listed on the grid page under workshops and events but won’t show under the menu drop down.
Thanks! The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
Why is my menu all bunched up on the homepage and not on other pages in my site.
I visited your site at testgestaltblog.wordpress.com but am not able to see any difference between the menu on the home page and other pages. Here’s a screenshot of what I’m seeing in Safari:
Would you be able to create a screenshot of what you’re seeing on your home page? If you upload the screenshot to your Media Library, I’ll be able see it from there. We have guidance on how to that here:
In addition, could you try visiting your site in another browser to see if you can replicate the trouble there?
Also, why won’t some of the child pages show under the parent pages even after I list them there, i.e. the calendar is listed on the grid page under workshops and events but won’t show under the menu drop down.
As you have a custom menu set up, you will need to manually add child pages under the parents.
To do this, first navigate to My Site in the top left of WordPress.com and then Menus on the left.
From there, click on the + icon next to the item you wish to add children to. You can then click on the option to “Add menu item to children.”
Let me know if that’s clear or if you have any extra questions. I’ll be happy to help further.

Thank you, now I’m seeing it as you do on all pages. Is there a way to expand it so all menu items are in one line?
Thank you for the tip to add child items, it was not apparent to me.

I’m glad to hear that the menu is displaying correctly for you now! It sounds like it was a temporary loading issue with your browser. If it comes up again, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies to see if that helps.
It’s possible to increase the amount of space your menu occupies (which will create space for all the menu items to fit along one line) with some custom CSS.
If you’re not familiar with CSS, it’s a coding language that’s used across the web to change the appearance of websites. Here at WordPress.com, it’s possible to use custom CSS to change certain parts of your theme’s design.
To add custom CSS, firstly navigate to the CSS panel of the WordPress.com Customizer. Below the introductory text in the resulting editor, copy and paste the following CSS:
@media screen and (min-width: 1020px) { .navigation-classic .menu-primary { width: 945px; } }Save your changes and your menu items will then all sit along one line. :) If you add more items in the future then you can increase the value of width in the above snippet to create more space.
Let me know if that’s helpful or if you have any further questions.

OK so back to the calendar under workshops and events. It’s added as a child but not showing as a drop down under the menu item. Is it showing for you? Thanks!

Hi @testgestaltblog,
I’m able to view a link to your Calendar page when hovering over Workshops & Events in your menu. Did you get this resolved?
Child pages won’t automatically be added to your site’s menu. Instead, you will need to follow the guidance here to set up a custom menu and add your child pages there:
