Home page post length & excerpt function

  Having read the Excerpt not on WordPress.org, it states that only the first 55 words will be displayed if the excerpt field is not filled out. I have posted a rather lengthy post but it is showing the whole article, not just a portion. I went back in and filled out the excerpt field with the portion I wanted to show on the home page, but it is still showing the whole post. Do I need to set something to truncate the post or use the excerpt?

  Don’t read the stuff at WordPress.ORG. It doesn’t apply to your blog here and will only confuse you.

  Roger that, but just to let you know, the link on the excerpt field does take you to the .org site.

  @mcrumph: You should use the “more” tag, as raincoaster suggested. The “Excerpt” option is designed for posting a summary, not the actual beginning of a post, and with many wordpress.COM themes it doesn’t even work (as you found out).
