Home page template confusion
-
I created a site with two pages: the privacy policy page and a static “index” page that I added. In Reader Settings, I chose “static page” and selected “index” as my homepage. It showed up fine (very ugly).
Then I found the Liberty FSE theme and chose it as a template. It automatically became my homepage with all its own content. I have been manipulating the template to adjust it as my homepage. Is that the way I should be working? I thought the template would apply to the index page I created.
Oddly, in Reader Settings, it still has my original “index” page set as the homepage — which is very unfinished and still lives in “all pages”. But the live homepage that is visible on the www, the FSE template, is not in “all pages.”
Am I wrong to be adjusting this template homepage the way I am?

I have seen something similar with my theme. My guess is that you should try adding that static index page after you have set Liberty FSE as your theme. I don’t know if that’s the proper way, but WordPress should say “Liberty FSE” theme next to at least one of the pages in your Pages section. This is just a way to understand what WordPress sees as your index, but you might have already checked this.
In WordPress click “My Home.” then click the Pages from the menu on the left.
1. Does one of your pages says — “Front Page, Liberty FSE Theme”
2. Can you try to use this as the ‘static index’ page, make you edits going forward on this page, and possibly delete the one you created? -
Thanks jrfunkmobmusiccollab. In my “pages” it does not say Liberty FSE Theme. However, the template seems to have its own “pages” section in the theme editor which must override “pages” in the dashboard. I’ve not encountered this before. The Privacy Policy page picked up the look of the theme. Its listed in both “pages” areas and if I change content in either, it is reflected in both.

ok. If I understand correctly, you have 2 pages functioning as the index, is that correct? When I load your website, it shows 2 kinds of “home” pages. https://fsnaheritage.org/home/ and https://fsnaheritage.org
If so, is the Liberty FSE theme working on both of these “index” homepages?
I’m no expert, but if you find out which “index” is the authority home page, per the Dashboad and the Themes editor, and of course your users, maybe that can tell you…something. If wordpress is not labeling one of them as “Front Page” that seems like the theme somehow broke something. Here’s another way to check the labeling of things: I also have “Pages” section in the dashboard and I can see a similar list of “Pages” in the Themes editor. In the Themes editor the “index” should say “Homepage” next to your proper “index”.
In summary and to confirm the issue:
- Your Dashboard is not labeling anything as the “Front Page” or as “Front Page Liberty FSE” Maybe we have different versions. I’m on the free WordPress blog platform (not wordpress.org).
- Will the Themes editor, click Appearance from Dashboard, then Themes, then click Customize. Will the Themes editor, label one of these “indexes” as Homepage? Then you know what index to edit. My Themes editor says “Homepage” next to it for my index.
- You have, what appears the be a manually created, “index” page missing from “All Pages” (in Dashboard and Themes editor?). is this correct? You cannot find it to edit it?
- The Privacy Policy page is working great.
- Is the Liberty FSE theme working on both of your indexes?
- Can you describe more why you think the “theme editor which must override “pages””?
