I am struggling because I have set featured images to go on front but they appear as black boxes- it is likely they are not loading. How do I fix this?

I see from the question you posed on a previous thread that you are having issues with the URL: http://mihsislander.org ?
If so that seems a to be a site hosted on another host such as godaddy etc… and not on WordPress.com. What I believe you are using is a WordPress.org site.
WordPress.com & WordPress.org are very different entities. See here for a run down of the differences.
The best place to go for help with WordPress.org sites is their forums at:
They do have a forum there and they are the one to help you with your issue.

The site you’re talking about runs the self-hosted version of WordPress (Also known as WordPress.org), while this is WordPress.com (the service). You’re better off asking questions about self-hosted WordPress over here: https://wordpress.org/support/
