Homepage not a homepage?

  I’m very new to wordpress. In the templates there is a homepage that you can use to post on or direct to a static page. When you link to a static page you have two topics in the navigation pointing to the same page (Home and the name of the page you linked to). How do I delete one navigation topic (but not the page) or be able to put content on the homepage that are not blog posts :-) Thank you!
