Hey there,
To have portfolios featured in your homepage, create a new page as ‘Home’ or any name that you want and set it as your static front page.
Click on edit page and in the right sidebar, go to Page attributes > Template > from the drop down select ‘Portfolio Page template’.
See this screenshotThis would show up your portfolio projects in the front page. Also, make sure you have featured images added for all your portfolio projects.
I recommend you read the Overview section of the Orvis theme:

Thanks so much VinnyKaur for your help
– It has worked. However with the portfolio as my home page
– there is now no link to my most recent posts to put in the menu bar – is this page no longer possible – how can I find the link? -
Hi there,
What I just noticed is your homepage settings still points to “Your latest posts”.
When you click on https://clairejamesla.wordpress.com/, you can see all your posts. But when you go to https://clairejamesla.wordpress.com/home/, you can see your portfolio page.
What you want to do now is, go to
My Sites > Design > Customize > Homepage Settings > Select ‘A static page’ > In the ‘Homepage’ dropdown select ‘Home’ and in the ‘Posts page’ dropdown select ‘Blog’. Publish once you are done. This way whenever someone clicks on your site, the front page would be your portfolio page. And you can add the blog page in your menu (like you have already done) where all your posts can be seen.
-
Also, I noticed that in your menu, you have added Blog twice.
You can remove one from Customize > Menu > Main menu > You would see to blog items there > Click and remove one. Also, please write back if you have any questions. :)
Thanks!
