Homepage slider not working in any of the FREE themes?

  • Unknown's avatar

I cant figure out how to get a slider working in 3 themes I’ve tried that ALL had sliders in their PREVIEWS.

I’ve tried Dyad, Stay, and Toujours.

Is it me? I’ve edited sliders on other people’s websites, but this is the first site I’m building for myself. What am I doing wrong?

    THANKS!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I’d be glad to help you set up a slider on your site. Sliders may work slightly differently in different themes, so the best way to learn how to set them up is by reading the theme’s setup guide.

    Dyad – https://wordpress.com/themes/dyad
    Stay – https://wordpress.com/themes/stay
    Toujours – https://wordpress.com/themes/toujours

Looks like you’re running Dyad right now. Scroll down to the “Featured Posts” section on the Dyad setup guide above and have a look at the setup guide. The basic steps are:

    – Add a featured tag to the Customizer’s Feature Content panel
    – Assign the same tag to the posts you’d like to include in the slider
    – Add a featured image to each of those tagged posts (a minimum of 1800 by 720px is recommended)

If you get stuck at any step, just let me know and I’ll be glad to help.

I’m having the same issue and I have Toujours, would you mind assisting me? I followed the instructions on the setup page but it’s still not working. Mine is https://afriendnamedtoe.wordpress.com

  • tenai421 – you’ve added the tag “Featured” to the Customizer, so step 1 is correct. But your post has “Featured” added as a category, when it needs to be added as a tag. The post also needs a featured image at the recommended size of at least 1160px wide by 655px tall. Finally, add at least a second published post meeting the same criteria to create the slider – right now you have only one post.

    Full setup guide for Toujours.

Hello kathrynwp, right now i’m modifying Toujours as well. And I got the features images set up correctly, i supposed. But the slider won’t show the image, although it is running the slider. Please help!

  • jimmytrez – both your featured posts are missing a featured image – once you add them at the minimum size, they will appear in the slider:

The post also needs a featured image at the recommended size of at least 1160px wide by 655px tall.

  • cyriltedsauriol – I see two things that may be interfering with your Featured Content display:

    – You have 27 posts tagged “Featured” – try un-tagging all except 3, since that’s what Toujours supports
    – You have 50 sticky posts. Try un-stickying all but a few. Stickying that many posts can throw things off

I have removed all sticky post, only 3 post have featured as tags, and the tagline also does not come up

  • Hi Ted, thanks for reporting back. There are a few more things I’d like you to check.

    1. Your Static Front Page settings are a little mixed up. Here’s how to fix it:

    – Publish a new blank page, called Blog
    – In your Customizer’s Static Front Page panel, for Front Page, select “Home” (it’s currently blank)
    – In your Customizer’s Static Front Page panel, for Posts page, select your new “Blog” page (it’s currently set to “Home”)

    2. Ensure that the featured image on each of your three feature-tagged posts meet Toujour’s recommended minimum size of at least 1160px wide by 655px tall.

Once the slider appears, the tagline should as well.

Let me know how it goes.

    Hi Kathrynwp

Just did everything you asked me too. The slider now works, tagline is included but the rest of the page is blank. I would like to see all my post below the slider. I am obviously missing a step here. Getting close though.

Got it to work yeah, but another problem. If i click on Black and white it brings me to the page the way I want ti to look. But I click on Home or blog both pages are blank. The static page is linked to your latest post

  • Looks like it’s getting there!

I realized that step 1 in my instructions wasn’t accurate, sorry about that. Toujours isn’t designed for a separate homepage and blog. It looks like your Customizer Static Front Page settings are correct. so you don’t need to change anything there.

These pages can be deleted, as they aren’t needed.
    – Home
    – Blog

You can delete the Blog item from your menu as well as there isn’t a separate blog page.

You can also remove and then re-add a Home link to your custom menu using this custom link instead of selecting a page: https://tedsblackandwhitepictures.wordpress.com/

Everything now works and looks awesome. Not sure about that last step though regarding a home page link . Thank you so much for your time and effort on this

  • Looks great!

The last step is only needed if you’d like to have a “Home” link in your menu. Since the site title is clickable and takes you back to the homepage, you may not want one. If you do want it and are getting stuck, just let me know and I’ll give you some more detailed steps.

Done. Added a home link to the menu and it all works perfect. Love the look of this blog now. Could not have done it without you. All Word Press Happiness Engineers rock, especially you. Thank you again

    Ted

  • Fantastic, Ted! It’s been my pleasure. Your photography is gorgeous and you show off BC well. Sending a wave from over in Montreal!

Hello kathrynwp, it’s me again, thanks for your last help. Now, I’m trying Hero theme, same problem the slider won’t work. What is wrong this time? Please help

  • Your homepage is set to display your latest posts. To display the slider you need to set your front page to be a static page, in your Customizer’s Static Front page section. Full instructions are here:
