Horizonal scrolling with Spearhead theme

    Hi,

I recently installed the new Spearhead theme on my blog: http://maxkatz.org. I noticed that I now get horizontal scrolling when I open a particular blog post, for example this one: https://maxkatz.org/2020/10/15/how-to-create-a-video-chat-room-with-one-api-call-using-daily-co/

Does anyone know why it’s happening? Is there a way to turn it off?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Ok, so I might have found the reason for the horizontal scroll. It happens if the top level menu is on. But, even with the menu on, I’d expect not to have a horizontal scroll.

  • Hi there,

I don’t see any horizontal scrolling when I look at that post now. Can you please undo whatever you did to fix it so we can see the issue in action?

Spearhead is brand new, so is sure to have some bugs. But we can report those to our developers to fix. We just need to be able to replicate the circumstances that lead to the issue.

I found the cause of this, sorry I didn’t post an update earlier.

Horizontal scroll is on when there is a menu item like this:

Once I made it shorter, there is no horizontal scroll.

  • Let’s see if I understand what you mean. If you add a long word to the drop-down menu on the last item, the whole post has a horizontal scroll bar?

    Yes, that’s correct.

    Hi folks,

If you add a long word to the drop-down menu on the last item, the whole post has a horizontal scroll bar?

In tests today on Spearhead, I was able to produce a horizontal scroll bar by including a long item in a drop-down menu in the header navigation menu, but the scroll bar doesn’t just appear on certain posts. It’s everywhere: homepage, blog page, single posts, static pages, portfolio page, projects, archive pages, etc. Also, it doesn’t have to be the last item in a drop-down menu, it can appear anywhere in a series of drop-down items, or be the only drop-down item.

Also, if an item is in a drop-down menu that depends from the last item on the right in a horizontal row* in the primary navigation menu, then it doesn’t need to be very long to produce the effect. I found 13 characters to be sufficient.

    * Whether a menu item appears as the last item on the right in a horizontal row of the navigation menu on Spearhead depends, in some cases, upon the screen size of the device used to view the site, and the browser window width. For example, you can force the last item to move to the next row of items by decreasing the width of the browser window.

  • Thanks @musicdoc1 for that extra info, I also see the issue on my test site as well. Props!

    @katzmax
I have reported this behaviour to our theme developers to take a closer look and fix. I do not have a timeline on when it will be addressed, so for now please avoid long page titles in your left-most dropdown. Other dropdowns are fine, the issue seems to be only with dropdowns that are close to the right margin of the site.

    Hope this helps!
