Horrendous spacing problem

  • Unknown's avatar

So I’ve been using WordPress for a few years with the same theme and never had an issue. After a few months since my last post, I made a new one today and discovered this:

    http://infinitegest.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/like-moths-to-a-tragedy/

My text is spilling straight across the page, into my blogroll with random and jagged spaces throughout. It’s a huge mess.

This is pretty frustrating, especially since I haven’t changed anything on my end. A quick look at my older posts will show that this is completely new and out of nowhere. I’d appreciate any help.

This thread has been tagged for Theme Staff support as I see exactly what you mean. I’m using Firefox 20.

    Thanks. I’m using Chrome.

  • You appear to have a few unclosed tags that need to be taken care of.

I can do that for you, but it looks like you’re currently editing the post.

I was just sort of fiddling around in the dark with it. Not really sure what I’m doing, so I’d appreciate any assistance.

Also, do you know what caused this? I’ve never encountered this before and would like to avoid it in the future. I know the posting layout has undergone a few changes.

  • There’s a lot more wrong here than I though. Amongst the issues of code interfering with the layout, you words that are breaking within themselves, like near the bottom:

    “. . . lanes at ju
    st the right moment.”

Did you copy and paste this from elsewhere, like another website or a word processor?

Ah. That could be it. I used Kingsoft Writer(an open source MS Word knockoff). I’ve always typed my stuff into a WP before posting, but I think this is my first time with that particular one.

    Should I try another one?

Okay, so I transferred everything to Abi word and back into WordPress and everything seems fine. I’m not sure if there’s a sticky somewhere, but Kingsoft Writer(a pretty good, complete substitute for MS Word otherwise) has some definite issues with being transferred over to Word Press.

    Thanks for the help.

Word Processing programs create very messy and non-compliant code that typically breaks any web application. They simply do not speak web.

Get an blog editor client such as Windows Live Writer (free download) if you are on Windows, or Ecto (not free, but at around $20 not a bank breaker either) if you are on Mac. They create web compliant code and you can actually write and publish posts right from them, no need to copy and paste, and WLW is very MS Word like.

I don’t know why nobody has suggested this yet. Go to Settings->Writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML” and save. This prevents whatever crap program you’re copypasting from from introducing crap tags, and protects your blog from these kinds of errors in the future.
