Hostgator to WP.com DNS Mess

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello I have started setting up my wordpress using a domain from Hostgator.

    Information

    Domain: Hostgator
    Server: Hostgator
SSL Certificate: Comodo SSL Security through Hostgator

The following is the information for Hostgator’s DNS:
    NS 1: ns1.wordpress.com
    NS 2: ns2.wordpress.com
    NS 3: ns3.wordpress.com
    NS 4: ns8495.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194
    NS 5: ns8496.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194

The domain was tied to WordPress.com. The following is the DNS information on WordPress.com:
    CNAME: *.lusthavefashion.com; Handled by WordPress.com

    A: lusthavefashion.com; Handled by WordPress.com

    NS: lusthavefashion.com; Handled by WordPress.com

    A: ns8495.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194

    A: ns8496.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194

While my site currently works. I would enjoy if someone could comment in any redundancies. I want to ensure that my DNS’s are set up correctly and that the SSL certificate is not hindered by pointing to an incorrect NS.

I appreciate any help I can get with this issue. Thank you very much

You have a lot of moving parts – I have flagged this for the staff to help

Are you using Host Gator for your email?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Auxclass,

Thank you for the flag and help.

Yes i am using hostgator for my email. I may mention i am just having everything forwarded to gmail and using my domain emails as aliases.

  • Hi @ilusthave,

It looks like you’ve got most of this corrected, but I’ll go ahead and clarify here as well, just in case it would be helpful to you or anyone reading.

You had it set up so that the main domain will sometimes point here and sometimes point to Hostgator, and I doubt that’s what you’re after.

If it should point here, keep only the wordpress.com nameservers, and remove these:

    NS 4: ns8495.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194

    NS 5: ns8496.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194

You would want to remove these as well if they were on our side:

    A: ns8495.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194

    A: ns8496.hostgator.com; 50.116.114.194

If you intend for a subdomain to point here or there, let us know what you have in mind and we’ll help you get there. Cheers :)

    @Supernovia,

I apologize for such a delayed response. It has been a bit hectic at work lately. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
I am going to play around with this and ensure that this is completed correctly. Hopefully this will take car eof everything. I will comment if something comes up.

    Again, thank you.

  • No problem, @ilusthave . Let us know if you need more help!

    @Supernovia,

If you don’t mind I would like to share all the details of my little project. I seem to be missing a piece.

    PROJECT GOAL
I want to create a microblog for my company. This page will have a minimalistic landing page with 3-4 additional pages (team, about, contact).

    STEPS TAKEN

    1. Domain, LustHaveFashion.com, from hostgator

    2. Server space from hostgator

    3. SSL Certificate from hostgator. ( I need this for a portion of my project, I understand this is a bit unorthodox for a microblog).

    —————————————–
I appreciated the plug-and-go templates offered by wordpress.com. A few of these are useful for creating a microblog template. I also do not want to have to spend too much time building something from the ground up if I can possibly just use a template.

    4. Mapped my domain, LustHaveFashion.com, to my wordpress.com account.

My settings are all as above, in my previously mentioned message.

    CONFUSION
As i proceed, it seems like I may need to have everything pointing to the hostgator servers in order to have my domain utilize the SSL certificate. I wanted to ask someone with more experience to offer their opinion.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I have also mapped all of my @LustHaveFashion domain emails to my gmail account. None of these emails are currently able to receive messages. They display the following error:

“The recipient server did not accept our requests to connect.”

I assume this also has to do with the confusion in which server the domain is pointing towards. I thought I would offer this information as well in case this provides any clues to my situation.

I really do appreciate the time you have taken to help me with this. I feel like this is as simple as having everything point to the hostgator server, but then where would that leave wordpress? I just want to be certain of my actions before proceeding and messing things up further.

Again, thank you for your helpful advice. I hope you enjoy your weekend.

  • As i proceed, it seems like I may need to have everything pointing to the hostgator servers in order to have my domain utilize the

To use SSL with a custom domain, you would indeed need to use your own installation. We don’t have support for SSL on custom domains right now.

Hostgator would also need to help you set the email up properly.

    @Supernovia,

That is what I anticipated. Final question: Would I be able to complete my intended goal using wordpress.org instead?

Thank you and enjoy your weekend!

  • Hi,

Final question: Would I be able to complete my intended goal using wordpress.org instead?

Sure. This article explains how to move things to WordPress.org:
