Hosting a .co.uk website
-
I have a .co.uk website (if WordPress inserts kevtownsend.wordpress.com automatically at the end of this request, ignore it — not relevant).
This website uses WordPress. I would like to move the domain into WordPress.com. Is it possible for me to have a wordpress.com website with a .co.uk domain? If not, what would be my best options?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey @kevtownsend,
Yes, you can transfer or register a .co.uk TDL with WordPress.com.
I am adding modlook tag for staff intervention.
They are the one who can provide you with an exact solution. Thanks !!!

Hi @kevtownsend to clarify, we actually can’t transfer in .uk domains just yet. But, you’re welcome to map the domain here until then.
First, choose a plan here:
https://wordpress.com/plansThen add the domain here, choosing to map it. https://wordpress.com/domains
Finally, be sure to update the domain settings to point to our servers, and wait a few hours for that to take effect.

Hey @supernovia,
Maybe there is some confusion, I found .co.uk in avaible list
Can you confirm once?
Thanks !!!

Hi @arvindsinghu,
Here’s the list of the domain extensions that cannot be transferred to WordPress.com:

Thank you all for your advice. Can I ask one further question because I’m a tech ninny: does mapping have any detrimental effect on SEO?
-
Mapping will not harm your SEO.
It can take a few hours (in rare cases up to 72 hrs) for the name server changes to become completely populated around the globe. It’s possible to take a temporary hit in SEO during that time, but it will rebound.

Glad we could help, @kevtownsend
And @arvindsinghu, to clarify, we can actually register .co.uk domains here, but we don’t have a way to transfer them in yet. So if they’re already registered, they would need to be mapped. Hoping that helps!

@kevtownsend sorry, one more tip on SEO :) If you’ve had an existing website with existing SEO, I recommend copying the pages and their URLs here, as closely as you can. So if the old site had
/contact/
and
/services/stuff-we-do/
… make sure those pages with the same content exist on the new site. That way you can avoid breaking existing links that are out there on the web. And if you want to adjust your content later, you can. I’ve just seen cases where people get rid of all their content in a redesign process, and then lose SEO for that, and personally I recommend avoiding that. :)
Let us know if you have more questions on this!

Thank you again. Could I
* open a business account with WordPress (currently I only have free account)
* copy (export and import) my existing external website into WordPress.com (but without it being public)
* edit the new site (eg, change themes, etc)
* when ready, map that to my .co.uk domain and change the external nameservers, and go public? That would, I think, give me a seamless transfer.

Hi there,
You can do that, yes. In other words, you do everything you want to do here on WordPress.com, and only connect your domain to the site once you’re ready to make the switch. In the meantime your domain can continue pointing to your current site while you work on the new one.
Note that setting a site to private is only possible on a regular WordPress.com site. If you install plugins or third party themes on your site that setting will disappear, but in that case we can help you add a plugin to perform the same function instead.

Thank you. That is excellent; and my route forwards.
It will be quite slow since the day job is rather demanding — but at least I know what I’m doing now.
Many thanks to everyone here.

No problem, you’re welcome to get in touch again if you have any more questions along the way.
