Hosting and Domain Registration
-
Hi,
Last year I transferred my domain registration, kimberlynalleyne.com, from Bluehost to WordPress. At least I thought I did. A few weeks ago, I began to receive emails from Bluehost reminding me that my domain registration and domain privacy were scheduled to expire on January 5, 2015. I was initially confused because I thought that my site was now registered with WordPress since I’d paid a $13 domain mapping fee.
Unfortunately, my assumption was incorrect and recently when I went to update my blog, the URL/domain had expired. I immediately logged in to my old Bluehost account and paid $14.99 for domain registration and $10.99 for domain privacy; I also paid Bluehost $36 for three-months of web hosting.
At this point, I no longer understand if WordPress offers hosting, or even what the $13 that I paid covers. I certainly can’t afford to pay $36 every three months for web hosting, but I am not sure what to do.
Does WordPress offer hosting? I don’t see it offered in the Store. Cannot I not register my domain with WordPress? I’d much rather purchase these products through WordPress than Bluehost.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks,

Hi Kim,
WordPress.com hosts your site, so you don’t need to pay anyone else (like Bluehost) for web hosting. (It’s free to host your site at WordPress.com, so you don’t need to pay anything for that!) All you need to pay to Bluehost is the domain registration and privacy.
That’s because the domain mapping upgrade you purchased here at WordPress.com lets you use your domain registered elsewhere with your site hosted at WordPress.com. WordPress.com can’t accept incoming domain transfers, so you need to keep your domain registered with Bluehost (or any other domain registrar) so you can keep using it here.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about that.
