Hosting and Feeds

    Hi,
I have a free WordPress blog and want to change it to include hosting so I can enhance the site and also give away music, podcasts etc. My domain is registered with UK2. Would I be better getting hosting through them, or from wordpress and pointing my domaim name to that?

Additionally, when I move over from free to hosted wordpress, will my RSS feed change? I have submitted it to Feedburner, Technorati etc using the feed from the free version.

    Thanks

I’m not sure what you’re asking for exactly. What you can have at WordPress.com is pretty much standard, with the possible upgrades of domain name, additional storage space with MP3 or Video hosting, and CSS. You still won’t be able to have Flash or Javascript if you stay at WordPress.com hosting.

If your URL changes, your RSS changes too. Re-submit.

    Hi Raincoaster,
Thanks for the reply. I already have a domain I’m happy with and want to keep, but it’s already registed with a 3rd party and currently pointing to my name.wordpress blog. Maybe I’m over complicating this, but I’m assuming I should just be able to point my domain at whatever my new wordpress blog address is (or will it stay as name.wordpress.com?)

I would lean more towards hosting here and moving the domain name to here. 1) It’s probably cheaper since you’re not paying for hosting 2) you don’t have to worry about things like upgrading, backups, bandwidth etc as that’s done for you, 3) if you categorize your posts, you get the extra benefit of being listed within the tag system, and 4) you don’t have to worry about your site going down as there’s multiple datacenters here with wp.com to share the load.

As to your RSS feed, usually the plus of that service is that they hand out a static URL for your feed while you change where it comes from. The URL they pass out doesn’t change so it shouldn’t matter to the end readers.

    Hope this helps,
