Hosting and SEO

As I mentioned above, cookies danced, but I was logged in to WordPress.COM (otherwise this wouldn’t be an issue…) Hanni has replied to my support request that she’s looking into the problem.

@mtdewvirus-Apparently that was the culprit, although I have not changed my settings in FF between then and now. Odd.
Case solved. Nothing to see here, move along… ;)

Changing the subject back to Hosting and SEO (hope you’ve solved your dancing cookies and grey bar issues in the meantime)…
I’ve set up a .wordpress.com blog for academic colleagues to discuss issues related to my business. They will be linking into this blog from their .ac domains.
I also have a business domain of my own. My ultimate goal is to increase the ranking of my business domain. Should I publish the blog on wordpress.com or should I publish it on my own domain?
Hope this makes sense,
Elite, VRL -
VRL – it might be a moot point, depending on the content of your business domain. WordPress.com blogs are non-commercial.
-
Hey ellaella, thanks for responding :)
VRL is a financial publication, the blog would have academics discussing the world of finance…?
-
To add more to that – VRL publishes news about the finance world, some for subscribers only, quite a lot of free content as well. The blog is there to create an intellectual discussion and would be free for all of course.
-
As far as I’m aware, there’s no way to do a section limited to paid subscribers on WordPress.com. You probably want an independent blog using WordPress software. Then it wouldn’t be hard; here it’s not only potentially impossible, but charging for access to a WP.com site is probably against the terms of service.
-
Oh no the blog would be free to all. I’m just not sure whether to have a wp.com, wp.org or to host it myself… I guess I should experiment and see what gets the most traffic and ranking…?
-
You’re contradicting yourself:
“some for subscribers only, quite a lot of free content as well.”
“the blog would be free to all.”
Your content is more important than your host.
-
I think you mean the blog would be a part of your website? If that’s the case, it’s definitely easier with a WP.org blog. You’d have to put a .com one in an iframe or link to it and have it look substantially different from the website.
A WP.com blog will always outrank a .org blog in SEO terms, all other factors being equal.
-
We probably have some blogs which charge for access – they will be private of course.
There is no rule against it but you get zero support for it. How to set it up, who gets access, what they do with material, if they do not pay, if they say they paid and you didn’t deliver, if they share the login, if you wanted to track who does what etc etc – we would provide no help there. If you have a .org blog you can do lots more on controlling access.
-
OK, so raincoaster says a .com blog is better in SEO terms, that’s a good start for me.
To clarify once again. I have a website already (not a blog), which is a news site, and has some free content and some paid content. This is slightly unrelated to my actual question regarding blogs, and it seems to have confused everyone so I apologise for that.
I want to set up a new blog, free for all, to encourage academic discussions, and I’m not sure what’s the best method to ensure it gets a high google pagerank:
1.host it on my current news site i.e. http://www.vrlnews.com/blogs
2.host it on my server but with a different domain name i.e. http://www.vrlblogs.com
3.let wp.com host it vrlnewsblog.wordpress.comOr perhaps it doesn’t matter at all?
Thanks again

VRL did you eventually get any clarity regarding the best way to host your blog in SEO terms?
I have a similar question, I have a WP.com blog, that is visible through a domain also, but neither of the URL’s are my company website.
I have been told that I need to transfer my blog across to a WP.orgt self install, accessed through the company website domain – http://companyname.co.uk/myblog and this will deliver far better results for SEO purposes and drive them into my main site, so a great tool for blogging and traffic….
Does anyone have any ‘spin’ on what is best and what you might suggest?
On a slightly separate note, are there any tips on ‘getting the most traffic from your WP blog – in terms of SEO’ so if I stay, i can make sure I do as much as I can!
As always, many thanks in advance :0)

You have been seriously misinformed. Self-installed blogs are wimps in terms of SEO compared to WP.com.
However.
WordPress.com blogs whose primary purpose appears to be to drive traffic to a third-party site (ie off WP.com) are subject to deletion.
So you’ve got a tradeoff here.
