hosting /domain mapping – is it wordpress or who?

If I use domain mapping and pay the upgrade fee. Who is therefore hosting my blog? Is the blog hosted by wordpress or a third party host.
Will the blog be determined self hosted in this way.
Which is better domain mapping or fully self hosted by a hosting company?

If you use the Domain Mapping feature, WordPress.com will be the host of your blog.
