Hosting my WP site under my domain name
-
I intend to install WP under my domain name that I’ve owned for over 20 yrs. and have it hosted on the server that I pay for every month. WP support tells me that I have to do the domain mapping thing in order to do this.
What I don’t understand is why do I have to do the domain mapping thing when everything will be hosted on my own server.
I’m under the impression that WP is just like any other web page builder in the fact that it is only the software needed to produce web pages and/or full web sites. similar to the old Microsoft Front Page software or something similar.

If you have your WordPress site on your own server, then you do not need anything from WordPress.com.
While similar, WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress.org are not connected with each other:

Hi rootjosh,
Thank you for such a quick response to my question. There’s just one other thing I need to ask and that is: if I install WordPress.com under my domain name on my own server, and people enter my domain name into a search engine, will they be taken directly to my WordPress.com site and do I have to remove the index.html page from my server in order to make this happen?
Thank You and Have A GREAT Day!

Those are really questions best asked of your webhost. You will need to configure your domain name to point to your webhost. Their support team should be able to give you their specific instructions for doing so.

Hi rootjosh,
Thanks again for another very quick response. But I think you may have mis-understood my question.
I’ve had the same hosting company since I first got started with my Internet Marketing career back in 1996. My original DNS settings have never changed in all that time and they have been set to display my home page for my main web site at: http://teejayenterprises.net .
My question was, and still is. When I install the WordPress.com site under my domain name, and the DNS settings remain the same, would people be directed to my WordPress.com site when they enter my domain name into a search engine or would they be taken to my original index.html page or home page of my site ??
If not, then would the removal of the index.html page from my server correct that problem ??
If you are still having a bit of a problem understanding my question, just click on this link: http://teejayenterprises.net and you’ll be taken to my current home page for my main web site.
What I want to accomplish is that when people click on that link, or enter my domain name: http://teejayenterprises.net into a search engine I want them to be taken directly to my WordPress.com site that I’ll be setting up in the future. And I really need to know if I have to remove the index.html page from my server in order to accomplish this.
I sincerely hope that I’ve not confused you in my explanation of what I’m trying to accomplish here.

I’m a little confused about something. You talk about setting up a WordPress site on your own server. But then you also talk about people going to your WordPress.com site:
What I want to accomplish is that when people click on that link, or enter my domain name: http://teejayenterprises.net into a search engine I want them to be taken directly to my WordPress.com site that I’ll be setting up in the future.
Can you clarify if you are setting up a WordPress site on your own server (generally called a WordPress.ORG site) or a site here on WordPress.com?

Hi rootjosh,
My apologies for causing you some confusion about what I’m attempting to accomplish and I’ll try my best to clear up your confusion.
Okay, As I’ve said before, I’ve owned the domain name teejayenterprises.net ever since I first got started with Internet Marketing back in 1996. I’ve also had this domain name hosted by BlackwireHosting.com since the very beginning of owning my domain name since 1996.
As it stands right now, I can go to my C-panel and scroll down to Fantastico and do a one click install of the WordPress.com software on my server at Blackwire.com.
I’ve already done this with a membership site that I currently have on my main web site located at: http://teejayenterprises.net/Members .
But I’ve installed the WordPress.com software for my membership site in a separate sub-domain on my server and I did not have to make any changes in my DNS settings in order for people to be able to access this membership site.
If you click on this link, http://teejayenterprises.net/Members you’ll see that you are taken directly to my membership site. And this is what gives me the impression that I can do the same exact thing with installing the WordPress.com software in the directory on my BlackwireHosting.com server that holds my teejayenterprises.net domain name.
I’m under the impression that all of the pages for this membership site are currently being hosted on my BlackwireHosting.com server and not on WordPress.com servers.
As I said before, if you click on this link: http://teejayenterprises.net you will be taken directly to the home page of my current web site. You’ll also notice that this site is NOT mobile friendly if you attempt to do that with a mobile phone. And that is what I’m attempting to accomplish by making this major change.
I want to do the same type of quick install by installing the WordPress.com software on my BlackwireHosting.com server in the directory that holds my teejayenterprises.net domain name. So that once I’ve got the WordPress.com software installed under my domain name, when people click on this link: http://teejayenterprises.net they will be taken directly to my WordPress.com site that I’ll be creating instead of being taken to the home page of my web site.
In other words, once I’ve got the WordPress.com software installed on my BlackwireHosting.com server under my domain name, it will be replacing my current web site that is in dire need of a major overhaul and updating to make the entire web site become mobile friendly.
I might be wrong but I’m under the impression that WordPress.com is merely the same type of software as Microsoft Front Page or Adobe Dreamweaver that allows me to create web pages or complete web sites and whatever I create are all hosted on my server located at BlackwireHosting.com and not on WordPress.com servers.
I really hope that I’ve cleared up any and all of your confusion regarding what I’m attempting to accomplish and I really do not know how to explain it any clearer to help you understand what I’m attempting to accomplish with WordPress.com.

I understand completely now. Thank you for clarifying.
I’m under the impression that all of the pages for this membership site are currently being hosted on my BlackwireHosting.com server and not on WordPress.com servers.
This is correct.
I want to do the same type of quick install by installing the WordPress.com software on my BlackwireHosting.com server in the directory that holds my teejayenterprises.net domain name.
I’m afraid that these are not questions that WordPress.com support can help you with. We can only assist with sites that are on our servers. The BlackwireHosting support team should be able to help you get that set up. Additionally, this site is a great resource for self-hosted WordPress sites:
