  I work for a recruitment and IT company and would like to use word press and host the website on our own servers using word press as the website development tool, whats the first step to take?

  Excellent choice! The very first thing is to understand the difference between WordPress.Com and WordPress.Org, because that can create a lot of confusion:
  https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_vs_WordPress.com is a who is who explanation.
  https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ explains many of the differences between a self-hosted site such as you are describing and sites hosted at WordPress.Com.

  Then, a great place to start is at:
