hosting options for my new WordPress site

    Greetings WordPress.com, my web developer has put together a WordPress version of my current (old-fashioned) website, and I’m wanting to have it hosted in the best way. I’ve seen other web hosts listed as ‘recommended’ by WordPress, but it occurred to me that WordPress.com would probably provide amazing hosting for its own sites. Any thoughts?

    As this is the support forum for WordPress.com and my site is hosted here then of course I would agree that here is the best and easiest place to build a wordpress site.

    Hi there,

    WordPress.com is definitely an option – on our Pro plan you can do almost everything you can do with a stand-alone WordPress installation at another host, while having the benefit of the automatic updates and maintenance, backups, security and support we provide.

    The only possible obstacle might be getting your site onto WordPress.com: did your developer build your WordPress site locally on their computer, or is it currently available online?

    If it’s online, you can use the Jetpack plugin to migrate the entire site, as-is, to our servers on our Pro plan as explained here:

    But we don’t support directly uploading a locally-created site to our servers. We do offer SFTP and database access on the Pro plan, so it is possible to directly upload plugins and themes, and technically you can import an existing database as well. But specifically importing an existing database could overwrite some database tables your site needs to work correctly with us, so it’s not something we recommend.

    So in the case of a locally developed site, we recommend just importing your content (posts/pages) using a standard WordPress export/import, and using the dashboard to install your theme/child theme, plugins, and copy over any customizations you’ve made to the site.
