hosting own website vs. WordPress.com?

Is it better to build your site from scratch on GoDaddy rather than using the templated formats on WordPress.com?

When you purchase your domain name from WordPress, is that only valid for use on the WordPress.com site (e.g., “name.com” is really “name.wordpress.com”)?

If you purchase the domain mapping upgrade, then your site is still hosted for free on WordPress.com and all the ToS remain in effect. You are also restricted to the same themes as an unmapped wp.com site. Mapping upgrades apply to one blog, and you must pay for the upgrade each year.

As for building your own site:
Whether it’s better or not probably depends on your skill with code and web design. You could pay to host your own site on GoDaddy or somewhere else and use the free WordPress.ORG software to make it work. Then you could design your own template or use one of the thousands you can find online.
