hosting questions
-
Apologies for asking multiple questions, but the support service is closed and would be grateful if I could get some answers about the paid wordpress.com hosting service:
Is it possible to use a domain name registered with another registrar?
Do you automatically update WordPress as new stable versions are released? And if so, how soon are udates usually applied?
Do you regularly back-up the user’s WordPress database? If so, how often?
Is it possible, and straightforward, for users to make and download their own database back-ups? Do you provide instructions for this?
Can users select and configure their own templates?
Can users select and configure their own plug-ins?
Is it possible to transfer accounts to another person, eg if I were to set up a blog for a friend could I then transfer the account to them?
Thanks in advance

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.
This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.
If you don’t understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you may find this information helpful.
If you forgot to include a link to your blog, you can reply and include it below. It’ll help people to answer your question.

Is it possible to use a domain name registered with another registrar?
Yes
Do you automatically update WordPress as new stable versions are released? And if so, how soon are udates usually applied?
yes – the version on WordPress.COM is usually a bit ahead of the .ORG versions.
Do you regularly back-up the user’s WordPress database? If so, how often?
WordPress.COM has multiple server farms and does some sort of backups – details from the staff – you can get the text of your blog by exporting your site and saving the .XML file.
Is it possible, and straightforward, for users to make and download their own database back-ups?
No FTP access nor access to the database
Can users select and configure their own templates?
You are limited to the 150++ templates that WordPress.COM provides – you can not upload your own Template or Theme – you can change the Look but not the functionality of a Theme if you purchase the CSS upgrade (annual) – security reasons
Can users select and configure their own plug-ins?
No Plug-in’s are not allowed for security reasons – you do have a ton of Widgets that a .ORG Theme does not have – if you use the VIP hosting you can use Plug-in’s but VIP hosting starts at about $ 20,000 per year, add $ 5,000 for each Plug-in and you also need a “superstar programmer / Admin” on your staff.
Is it possible to transfer accounts to another person,
Yes – quite easy to do

I want to get Host Gator to host my site, can I get a refund from WordPress, anyone know if it is possible, I have only got wordpress.com a little over a month ago but I want to add plus ins and HostGator is good and cheap

On all but domain names, if the upgrade is less that 30 days, then you can get a refund. On domain names the refund period is only 2 days and I believe that is a rule of the partnering domain registrar, not wordpress.

The 48 hour domain name seems to be an internet standard. But no need for the domain name refund – just set your site up on Host Gator or whoever then change the name servers for your domain to point to your new host.
