hosting requirements to upgrade theme
-
I’m currently using a free theme and hosting my blog via WordPress.com. I am looking to upgrade to integrate Elegant Themes (Divi) for the design of my site. In order to do so, though, I need to upgrade my WordPress account. I’m just not sure if this means I also need to self-host. Can someone please clarify if this is the case?
If yes, I’ve been exploring hosting sites and I believe I will lose some of the data I currently display (mainly, here I’m considering social media impressions) which I would like to preserve if possible. Does anyone have any experience with transferring this data via hosting server switches?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ Here’s a summary of the steps in the move you have to make.1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then update the nameservers http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
NOTE: WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

No, you do not need to “upgrade” your account. You need to create an entirely new website using WordPress.org software on paid hosting and yes, you will lose your social media share numbers when you change hosting.

Likes cannot be “preserved” and exported. Stats and subscribers can be migrated only.

Okay, thank you so much for the detailed response. I really appreciate it. And you’ve touched on another question – whether I would be able to preserve subscribers as well. But it sounds like they can come along with.

Yes subscribers can be migrated https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/#wordpress-com-to-self-hosted-site
To have Staff migrate your stats after you make the move you install the JetPack plugin and activate it and then post a thread here and tag it with modlook in the sidebar of the thread.

Thanks, timethief.
I opted to do the Guided Transfer; however, I am unable to purchase it from my dashboard as it indicates and I do not see any alternatives.
On the Guided Transfer link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/ it says,
“The Guided Transfer is a one-time fee of $129.00 per blog transferred, and is available for purchase in your dashboard in Tools -> Export.
(Note: If you don’t see the Guided Transfer option on that page, you likely have a Premium Theme or use Custom Fonts, which do not transfer. If you use a Premium Theme, you’ll need to switch your site to a free theme. If you use Custom Fonts, you’ll need to switch back to your theme’s default fonts. Once you do, you can add the Guided Transfer upgrade to your shopping cart.)”
When I go to Tools, my options are “Available Tools, Import, Export, Delete Site”. When I go to “Export” I’m only able to export the data from my site, not purchase a Guided Transfer option.
But I do not have a Premium Theme (I’m using the free theme Motif) and I do not use any Custom Fonts (I’m unable to since I’m not a premium member).
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sabrina -
