hover background not picking up other CSS

Hi, I am trying to add a hover feature to my menu items. I have modified the menu items slightly through some other CSS code, and when I add the hover feature, it does not pick up those modifications. As a result, the background color that I am adding is shifted slightly (not behind the menu items properly).
I have a feeling that I am going to need to restructure the whole thing, but is there an easy fix?

YES! Thank you – I think I pretty much figured it out on my own!
One little question I still have – is there a CSS code that would modify the boxes to adjust to the text length? So, for example, the word “CV” is a lot shorter than “Painting and Drawing.” Ideally, the block background that comes up when your mouse hovers on the word would conform based on the length of the word…anything I could do to make this adjustment?

It can be done, but it would require a good bit of changing on how you have done the customization on your menu. What you have done works, but this additional step would require that we change the way things are done.
Personally I think it looks better with all the blocks being the same size. If CV was just the length of the two letters, or even just a bit longer, it becomes more difficult to click with a mouse or tap on on a tablet or phone.
