Hover menus don't work on android platforms. At all!
-
Hello,
We’re using mckinley theme on our wordpress.com hosted site kymenlaaksonopisto.com
With android devices (like samsung galaxy tab) the hover menus are next to impossible to use. This seems to be very common problem with android browsers – see http://allbs.co.uk/2013/01/12/hover-menus-on-a-touch-device/
Is there any way a possibility to disable hover menus on speficic browsers or even at the whole site and require clicking? Or force android devices to use the mobile site?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
You can bring mobile devices to the WordPress mobile theme, instead of your full site on Mckinley, by activating the Mobile Theme setting here:
https://kymenlaaksonopisto.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=mobile-options
Since you have the Premium plan, you can then adjust the look-and-feel of that mobile theme with Custom CSS. Just make sure to add media queries so your full site isn’t affected.

Enabling mobile support does not solve the issue. Tablets still use the full site with hovers and not the mobile theme.

Hi there!
I just pulled up your site on my Android device and here’s what I see for your menu:
So, I’m not seeing any hover menus in your theme on mobile devices. This is also similar to what your site would look like on my phone, however I can’t grab a screenshot of that since you’ve enabled the mobile theme. We try to avoid hover menus in our mobile themes because of the exact issue you raised.
Did you load your site on your own phone or tablet and found the hover menu instead of the mobile menu? Can you send me a screenshot?

Hi,
Good that it works OK atleast on some devices! :)
The device is Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10,1″ with Android 4.4.2 – but for what I’ve heard the problem is not limited to this device model.

It looks like you may be requesting the desktop site in your browser. Can you check that setting?
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-request-desktop-version-of-a-web-site-in-chrome-for-android/
Can you tell me the resolution of your device? The responsiveness of our themes is based on screen size, so your device may be just missing the trigger for the mobile layout.
-
Checked that the desktop mode is disabled in browser.
The tablet is actually pretty much in factory defaults and it’s very common model around here so… many of our visitors are getting the non-working page. Screen resolution for Galaxy 4 10.1″ is 1280×800.
-
Thanks for the info. The screen resolution is what’s causing this. Currently the tablet/mobile version of your theme isn’t triggered until the resolution is 643 pixels wide or less. The resolution on your device is awesome, but pretty comparable with a desktop browser, so making the trigger bigger won’t help here since it would affect your desktop display as well.
The only ways I know of fixing this would involve using types of code that aren’t allowed on WordPress.com.
I would suggest looking for a theme that offers a tablet-friendly menu from the get go. A couple that I know of off the top of my head would be Edin, Goran, and Candela.
You could also change your menus so they aren’t nested. Then you could use the Custom Menu widget to add more depth, but this will add more clicking and page loads, so it may not be ideal

As this problem affects many modern tablets I’d say it’s up to wordpress to fix the underlying problem. Browser does transmit the platform information.
Changing theme is a valid proposal. However, stock themes available from wordpress.com should work all platforms correctly.
-
Actually, most mobile browsers do not transmit platform information anymore. I think this type of query would have to be a work around of querying the OS and figuring out what to do with that.
Most themes that are coded in a responsive way use the screen resolution to determine how to display the theme. We have no plans to change the way our responsive themes work, so I’d suggest you take a look at our themes that have a menu style that better suits your needs.
-
Already started to look into another themes. Hint: many of them have the same flaw with hover menus. WordPress.com is going to lose business seriously if it doesn’t evolve to support tablet platforms properly. Per Gartner forecast tablets shipments overtake PCs in 2015.
-
Thank you very much for letting us know about this. I will pass this behaviour pattern on to our theme developers.
In the mean time, best of luck with your new theme hunt!
