How about the ability to hide categories?

I use a lot of broad/general tags like “music”, “video game”, “OST”, “movie”, etc. but I don’t want all of them showing up in my sidebar when I add the widget. Maybe adding an option or column under Manage > Categories so the user can hide/show each one? It’s probably been thought of already, but I think it’d be a good idea.

People have complained about having an extremely long, unmanageable list. I figured this might help them out, myself included.

I understand that you are making a request. I currently have over 100 categories on one blog that I will completely redo during the festive season and reduce to 25 categories so I know where you are coming from. But I did want to let you know that you can remove the Categories widget and make a site index instead in case this is workable in your situation http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/11/how-do-i-make-a-site-index/

I’m aware of the workaround and I’ve actually considered using it. The problem I have with this is the need to update the list manually every time I add a new post. Kinda sounds like a pain. I would constantly forget to change it.

I know how you feel believe me. I too would find it a pain to add each new post title to a site index but I may have to do that on one one of my blogs. On the other one I’m not looking forward to editing hundreds of posts to reduce the number of my categories but there is no “bulk” mode of doing this … dang it all.

Why are you updating the list unless you’re adding in new categories with every post or keeping a post count?

Gotta admit that I like the idea of hiding a category as well. Best bet would be to submit a feedback from your dashboard with this suggestion as staff keeps tracks of requests like these.
