how about theme elements?
-
Yeah so everyone wants new themes…etc….why not let free users at least customize background/text colors? I would totally love to also do fixed/variable width windows, but colors would be a good start.
-
I wish I could edit this post, because it seems that I can edit colors on a very broad, basic level (though not links…shame)…definitely certain buttons like a first/last would be nice. How about making things like the header into page elements (widgets) and having the theme CSS simply define color choices for different sections? Would also allow for multiple sidebars.

I believe that’s what the yearly CSS upgrade allows you to do.
http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/about-the-custom-css-upgrade/Pay particular attention to this:
I’m having trouble getting my CSS to look the way I want. Can you help?
We don’t provide training or technical help with writing or debugging CSS. You’ll find some helpful resources for learning about CSS in this FAQ entry. There is also a Custom CSS Forum where you can discuss problems and share tips with other WordPress.com CSS users.
In other words, if you have the necessary skills, then the yearly CSS upgrade is for you. The number of users in the forums who can assist are very helpful, but few and far between. Also, while you can change your blog’s stylesheet, you cannot change the underlying template (the html).
-
Upgrading allows you to do anything you want to the CSS–however, I’m thinking of a way to allow a little flexibility with different blog types & such for the free users.
You can’t change the html, but that doesn’t matter because it’s going to be fairly barebones anyway; I assume that paying for the service lets you add more sidebars & such.
-
No, it doesn’t. It doesn’t change function or options of the theme, just the LOOK of it. And yes, you can edit colours on links if you change the colour of the text BEFORE making it a link.
-
But wasn’t the point of paying the ability to completely customize the CSS, which based on what I’ve done with CSS allows you to add multiple sidebars? Glad to know it before I decided to pay or anything, though.

You can experiment for free:
Appearance -> edit CSS
If you like what you can do with the free preview, then buy the upgrade. There is not much help for CSS on these forums. -
There are some high-end tricks to change the number of sidebars, but it takes way more experience that the typical weekend warrior has. Devblog can do it, and he’s been visiting the forums from time to time lately. CSS is quite powerful, and with the Sandbox themes, a lot can be done since they are basically blank canvases, but it takes experience. In general though, you cannot alter the underlying theme or wordpress script files and that is where the bulk of the functionality is set.
